𝘾𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙢’𝙨 𝙂𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙚 𝙑𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙨: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝘽𝙚𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝘽𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙠-𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙙 𝙎𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙩𝙨:

Graceful and delicate, the Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus) is one of the most elegant visitors to the wetlands of Canarem Lake Bird Sanctuary.

Easily recognized by its very long pink legs, black wings and back, and white body, this slender shorebird is perfectly adapted for wading in shallow waters. It uses its thin, straight bill to feed on small aquatic prey such as insects, larvae, and tiny crustaceans found in mudflats and lagoons.

With its striking contrast and graceful movements, it often appears to be “walking on water” as it moves gently across the shallows—an iconic sight of wetland beauty.

Though Black-winged Stilts are migratory birds, many are observed to stay longer in Canarem Lake when conditions are favorable. With rich feeding grounds and safe resting areas, the sanctuary becomes more than a stopover—it becomes a temporary refuge where they can rest and thrive.

These photographs highlight not just a bird, but a thriving wetland ecosystem. At Canarem Lake, every visit from these elegant travelers is a reminder of the importance of protecting natural habitats.

The students of Rosebelle Colleges Inc. successfully held their Educational Camping Trip at the Canarem Lake Bird Sanctuary, where they learned the importance of environmental protection, wildlife conservation, and responsible eco-tourism practices.

Special thanks to our resource speakers: 𝐒𝐢𝐫 𝐃𝐚𝐱 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐥 from the Tarlac Tourism Office, a strong advocate of sustainable eco-tourism across the province, and 𝐒𝐢𝐫 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐨 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐥, a multifaceted community leader, sports official, and outdoor advocate.

They shared valuable insights on:
• “𝗘𝗰𝗼-𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲” – highlighting Canarem Lake as a natural treasure and eco-adventure destination.

Here in 𝘾𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙢 𝙇𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝘽𝙞𝙧𝙙 𝙎𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙧𝙮, these habitats support both resident and migratory bird species that visit our wetlands throughout the year. Observing and documenting birds helps scientists and conservationists understand population trends and the condition of their habitats.

𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐒𝐢𝐫 𝐍𝐢𝐥𝐬’ 𝐒𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐮𝐛𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 🐦

For decades, Sir Nils traveled across different countries hoping to see the elusive Siberian Rubythroat. His journey began when he was about 16 years old, when he first heard—but did not see—the elusive bird. From there on, the story of him finding the bird began.

After years of patience and dedication, he never expected that this long-awaited moment would happen right here in Canarem Lake.

When the bird finally appeared, his reaction was priceless—pure joy & amazement. It was a powerful reminder that nature rewards those who patiently seek and respect it.

SRT is a beautiful migratory bird admired by birdwatchers around the world. The adult male features a brilliant, metallic red throat patch bordered by a narrow black line and a broader white border. Females and younger males typically lack this vibrant red, appearing more muted with a white or buff-colored chin. This small "feathered cluster" travels thousands of kilometers to escape the harsh northern winters, migrating south to Thailand, India, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Moments like this highlight why conservation and preservation are so important. By protecting habitats like Canarem Lake, we provide migratory birds a safe sanctuary and give people from around the world the opportunity to witness the wonders of wildlife in their natural home.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Tarlac Provincial Tourism Office, especially Dax Simbol and Popong Avila, for their continued support in promoting eco-tourism and wildlife conservation.

There is something magical about mornings at Canarem Lake. It calms the mind and soothes the soul....

As the first light of the sun gently touched the water, the lake awakened in silence — broken only by the soft calls of birds and the whisper of the wind through the reeds. A soft mist lingered above the calm surface, wrapping the sanctuary in peace and quiet wonder.

This morning, we ventured beyond our usual birding trails.
Together with Sir Art Soriano, we explored the other side of Canarem Lake — a part of the sanctuary rarely visited and largely unexplored by birders. With careful steps and open hearts, we discovered untouched patches of vegetation, hidden feeding grounds, and the raw beauty of nature thriving undisturbed. It felt like stepping into a secret chapter of the lake’s story.

Moments like this remind us that Canarem Lake is more than just a birding site — it is a living, breathing sanctuary filled with hidden treasures and delicate ecosystems that deserve our protection.

The other side of the lake may be less traveled, but it holds the same beauty, life, and promise.
