About Viejo: Viejo, a male stray dog from Guadalupe Viejo, was found in a heartbreaking condition—covered in multiple wounds across his body, with areas of exposed flesh and bone. He was also limping, raising concerns that he may have been hit and dragged by a vehicle.
Concerned animal lover Claire Pido found Viejo, contained him, and immediately reached out to Strays Worth Saving (SWS) for help. Seeing the severity of his wounds, SWS rushed him to Vetlink for proper medical attention.
Viejo tested negative for Canine Distemper (CDV). His initial CBC showed low RBC, HGB, and HCT, indicating mild anemia. He also tested positive for Ehrlichia, but negative for Babesia, Anaplasma, and heartworm.
His X-ray initially showed no obvious fracture. However, based on the wounds and marks on his body, the vets suspected that he may have been run over or dragged by a vehicle. Some wounds also appeared consistent with possible contact with asphalt or another chemical substance, which may have worsened his injuries.
Viejo has been given IV fluids, medications, wound cleaning, and laser therapy. Thankfully, he is eating well, and the swelling in his leg has decreased.
However, a repeat X-ray later raised concern for a possible tarsal fracture in his right hind leg, with a cracking sensation noted during examination. Further assessment is needed.
Viejo has already endured so much pain. Now, he needs continued treatment, medications, diagnostics, and care to have a chance at healing.
