In continuing the decolonization process, we unearth more stories of victory during World War II Leyte. In celebration of the 81st anniversary of Leyte Landing, the Leyte-Samar Heritage Society, Inc.—in partnership with The Republic of South African Embassy in the Philippines, the Hunters-ROTC Historical Society, Inc., the University of the Philippines Tacloban, the Province of Leyte, Department of Tourism - Eastern Visayas Office, the Office of the Third District of Leyte Representative Anna Veloso Tuazon, the Constantino Foundation, and Espazio Arts + History—continues the nationalist discourse in this upcoming lecture series!

Join us disseminate the discourse of local and world history, address gaps in the dominant historical discourse of World War II, and enable institutional and community leaders to set their agenda and directions for community development with historical education in their respective locales and spheres of influence.

✨ 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤: 𝐀 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 ✨

On August 4, 2024, at Julita, Leyte, the UP An Balangaw Performing Arts Group performed for the 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹'𝘀 𝗣𝗔𝗦𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗔𝗬𝗔𝗚 as part of the Feast Day celebration of Señor San Roque.

The performance featured a full repertoire of Waray songs, including “Pikahi Birahi,” “Neber Ben Tats, Neber Ben Kist,” a Waray-waray medley, and the all-time favorite “Kuratsa Menor.”

Guest soloist, 𝗠𝘀. 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗝𝗮𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮, captivated the audience with her solo renditions of “Bulan” and “Iroy Nga Tuna.”

- Prepare an excerpt of a script to be read expressively or acted out;
- Or prepare One (1) Waray/Cebuano/Tagalog and one (1) English song (Minus one or a capella);
- Or prepare a 1- to 3-min. Filipino folk or contemporary dance number.

𝙁𝙤𝙧 𝙈𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙨 - Bring your preferred instrument (Guitar, Bandurria, Keyboard, Drums, Flute, Bamboo Zither, etc.) and perform a 1- to 2-min. musical piece, preferably traditional songs.

𝙁𝙤𝙧 𝙎𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙥𝙩𝙬𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨/𝙋𝙤𝙚𝙩𝙨 - Submit and read or perform any original literary piece (Poem, Short Story, or Script in any language, preferably Waray)

Two years ago today, UP An Balangaw Performing Arts Group proudly took part in UP Tacloban College’s 50th Golden Founding Anniversary, marking our own 39th year by sharing the vibrant cultural heritage of the Leyte-Samar region through music and dance.

As we commemorate this moment, we also celebrate UP Tacloban College’s 52nd year of honor and excellence and its 2nd year as an autonomous unit of the University of the Philippines. A golden past, a thriving present, and a future brimming with promise—may the spirit of unity, creativity, and resilience continue to guide us all.

Bagamat madalas na hindi nabibigyang pansin, damang-dama ang bigat at giting ng bawat kamay na humuhubog sa kinabukasan ng bayan. Sa araw-araw na pagtindig—sa lupa, sa pabrika, sa silid-aralan, sa entablado, o sa lansangan—nariyan ang sipag, talino, at puso ng manggagawa.

Hindi matatawaran ang tibay, talino, husay, sipag, at dedikasyon ng manggagawang Pilipino—haligi ng ating lipunan at tagapagtaguyod ng pag-unlad. Mula sa bukid, pabrika, ospital, paaralan, opisina, at lansangan, tangan ng bawat isa ang diwa ng bayanihan at dangal ng paggawa.

Ngayong Mayo 1, kinikilala natin ang sipag, galing, at walang sawang paglilingkod nga manggagawang pangkultura at lahat ng mga manggagawa sa buong bansa. Kayo ang tunay na lakas ng Sambayanang Pilipino.

𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝟔 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐮𝐧𝐨𝐩 𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐚𝐧 ✨

Today, we celebrate the Sixth Anniversary of the World Premiere of Lunop Han Dughan - Pangandoy ni Yolanda, formerly subtitled "Boses ni Yolanda".

A Filipino musical theatre production and a paean for Mother Earth, presented by the UP An Balangaw Performing Arts Group together with Dr. Alegria O. Ferrer, Soprano.

A sarswela that tells the story of a love triangle set against the backdrop of Supertyphoon Yolanda, it was written not only as a tribute to the victims of the storm, but also as an urgent call to reflect on the consequences of environmental destruction.

It serves as both a commemoration and an eye-opener, reminding us of the cost of our disconnection from nature and urging us to rebuild a more compassionate, earth-centered future.

First staged on April 26 to 27, 2019 at the AS Grounds, UP Tacloban College, the production was held for the benefit of the Misericordia Children Center Inc. (formerly Mother of Hope Children Center) in Tacloban City.

We are honored to have witnessed the powerful performance of 𝗥𝗮𝗳𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 and 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝘆𝗰𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 of 𝗦𝗮𝗴𝗸𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹, who presented the short play “𝐊𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥” as a front act to our restaging of 𝐌𝐮𝐧𝐲𝐢𝐤𝐚 last April 11, 2025.

These young artists, guided by their mentor 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗯𝘂𝗲𝘃𝗮, continue to inspire with their passion and excellence in theater. We proudly cheer them on as they prepare to represent Eastern Visayas in the upcoming 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 in Vigan this May!
