Meet Mary Joy A. Digan, the owner of Digan Food Products Manufacturing from Brgy. Esperanza, Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte.

Diganโ€™s Banana Chips has become a beloved household name on Siargao Island, representing more than just a snackโ€”it stands as a symbol of family unity, resilience, and determination. Their journey from humble beginnings to sweet success truly embodies the heart and soul of Siargaoโ€™s entrepreneurial spirit.

In April 2023, Mary Joy saw an opportunity in the abundance of bananas growing in her community. With a clear vision to create something meaningful from this local resource, she decided to transform bananas into crispy, delicious banana chips. Armed with little more than a small startup fund and a big dream, she embarked on a journey filled with determination and creativity.

Starting small, Mary Joy worked tirelessly to perfect her recipe, ensuring each batch of banana chips would stand out in taste and quality. Her dedication soon paid off as her products gained popularityโ€”not just within her neighborhood but across the island. What began as a modest idea quickly blossomed into a thriving business, providing a steady income for her family and showcasing the untapped potential of local produce.

As her business grew, so did Mary Joyโ€™s creativity. Beyond banana chips, she expanded her product line to include camote chips, peanut turon, spicy dilis, and sugar-coated peanuts. Each item reflects her commitment to quality and her innovative approach to transforming simple, locally available ingredients into delicious, sought-after snacks.

Today, Diganโ€™s Banana Chips is not only a local favorite but also a prominent presence in souvenir stores across the island. Tourists flock to Siargao, eager to take home a taste of the island, and Diganโ€™s banana and camote chips have become a must-have souvenir for anyone visiting. This local success story has become an integral part of the islandโ€™s identity.

But Mary Joyโ€™s success goes beyond her growing business. She has become an actively assisted micro-entrepreneur (ME) of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through her participation in various trade fairs on the island and across the province. Through her participation, she has helped raise the visibility of local products, connecting small businesses with broader markets. Additionally, Mary Joy was selected as a beneficiary of DTIโ€™s Assessment, Consultation, and Triage (ACT) program, which provides support and funding to local entrepreneurs to help scale their businesses and amplify their impact.

Mary Joyโ€™s story is one of passion, perseverance, and innovation. She has not only built a successful business from simple bananas but also expanded her product line with other local treats, proving the value of resourcefulness. Her success has provided for her family and inspired others to see the potential in everyday resources. Through her hard work and determination, Digan has turned small beginnings into a legacy of pride, opportunity, and community impactโ€”showcasing the entrepreneurial spirit that defines Siargao.

In the early 1960s, a small yet vibrant business captured the essence of Filipino culinary heritage in the scenic province of Surigao del Norte. This marked the beginning of a culinary tradition. Nanay Tabingโ€™s Native Delicacies was said to be the original maker of the famous sayongsong and espasol and the first to introduce these delicious and healthy kakanins to the municipality of Mainit.

Their journey began with a simple goal: to share the traditional flavors of childhood delicacies taught to them by their beloved Nanay with the community. Armed with age-old family recipes and a deep love for cooking, they started crafting native delicacies in their modest kitchen. Named after their late mother, Mrs. Octaviana Sevandal Beltran, affectionately known as Nanay Tabing, the business continues to honor her legacy. They carried forward recipes passed down through generations, which would later become the legendary specialties we know today: espasol, sayongsong, biko, pichi-pichi, and kutsintaโ€”each made with meticulous care and the finest local ingredients.

Now a single proprietorship owned and managed by Mr. and Mrs. Claro S. Beltran, Nanay Tabingโ€™s Native Delicacies has grown into a beloved name, cherished in the community and beyond.

The news of Nanay Tabingโ€™s delectable treats spread quickly, resonating with locals. Their commitment to quality and authenticity earned them a loyal following, and soon, their small kitchen could no longer meet the increasing demand. With the support of family and friends, they expanded their operations, setting up a small stall in front of the highway in Brgy. Mabini.

Among their creations, espasol and sayongsong stood out as crowd favorites, capturing the hearts of many. Espasol, a cylindrical rice cake coated in toasted rice flour, became a signature dish. With its roots tracing back to the Spanish colonial era, espasol is a symbol of resilience and adaptation. What set Nanay Tabingโ€™s espasol apart was the infusion of their familyโ€™s secret recipe, which made the delicacy softer and more flavorful than any other.

Sayongsong, a cherished sticky rice cake wrapped in cone-shaped banana leaves and steamed to perfection, was another standout. This traditional treat, often enjoyed during festive occasions, became a hallmark of Nanay Tabingโ€™s repertoire. Their version of sayongsong was renowned for its perfect balance of sweetness and texture, a testament to the meticulous preparation that went into each batch. As a result, it became immensely popular not only in Surigao del Norte but throughout the Caraga Region in northeastern Mindanao.

As the years passed, Nanay Tabingโ€™s business flourished. However, with growth came challenges. In 2021, the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Odette left their facility partially damaged. Yet, with the assistance of the Department of Trade and Industry's Pangkabuhayan sa Pagbangon at Ginhawa (PPG) program, they received crucial support in the form of supplies and raw materials, allowing them to rebuild and continue to thrive.

Embracing the future, Nanay Tabingโ€™s also incorporated modern technology to expand their reach. Through the help of DTI, they embraced digital marketing, creating a brand that resonated with both the young and the old. Through their social media presence, they shared mouth-watering photos and the stories behind each delicacy, connecting with food lovers and potential business partners alike. This digital presence broadened their customer base, with orders flooding in from across the region.

Nanay Tabingโ€™s contributions to preserving Filipino culinary traditions have not gone unnoticed. The business has received numerous awards and accolades, solidifying its status as a cultural icon. Their espasol and sayongsong were even featured during Filipino Food Month in the pilot episode of Tatak Caraga by the Department of Agriculture CARAGA, further cementing their place in the annals of Filipino cuisine.

Today, Nanay Tabingโ€™s Native Delicacies is not just a business; it is a living legacy. Their story is a testament to the power of tradition, passion, and perseverance. The Beltran familyโ€™s goal is to continue inspiring future generations, passing on the art of making espasol and sayongsong, and ensuring that these beloved delicacies will continue to be enjoyed for many years to come.
