On April 17, 2026, a residential fire struck Almendras-Cogon, Sorsogon City, leaving 9 families—61 individuals—without homes. The fire was declared out at 10:55 AM, but its impact continues to be deeply felt by those affected.

Families are now temporarily sheltered at Sorsogon State University Main Campus, where support has been pouring in from various agencies, including LGU Sorsogon City.

In response, PRC Sorsogon, together with Sorsogon State University - College Red Cross Youth Council volunteers, immediately stepped in to serve. A First Aid Station attended to 4 patients, a Welfare Desk provided Psychosocial Support to 32 individuals, and Child-Friendly Space activities brought comfort and a sense of normalcy to 17 children amidst the crisis.

Behind these efforts are 8 dedicated Red Cross Youth Volunteers—still growing in number—working hand in hand with our Chapter Personnel, showing compassion, strength, and the true spirit of volunteerism.

To all our volunteers, your service brings hope in the darkest times. ❤️
Kudos to our RCY Volunteers. Kudos to everyone who continues to serve.

On April 16, 2026, our EMS team responded to a 911 call for a drowning incident at Lebanon Beach, San Juan, Bacon District, Sorsogon City. Three individuals were involved—two were rescued through the quick actions of locals, but one remained missing.

For two days, Emergency Response Unit and EMS volunteers, together with PCG Sorsogon, CDRRMO, PNP, and Bantay Dagat, worked tirelessly in a joint Search, Rescue, and Retrieval operation—holding on to hope and driven by the desire to bring closure to a grieving family.

On April 18, 2026, at 12:59 PM, the missing individual was finally found through the collective effort and bayanihan of the community. Though the outcome was heartbreaking, the recovery was carried out with utmost respect and dignity. The family was given time to be with their loved one and provided with psychosocial support in this time of deep sorrow.

As of 2:30 PM, PRC Sorsogon has officially concluded its operations.

We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family. 🤍

=================================

The Philippine Red Cross - Sorsogon Chapter would like to formally inform the public and all partner institutions regarding the implementation of Department of Health (DOH) Administrative Order No. 2026-0003, which prescribes the updated maximum allowable blood service fees for blood and blood products.

🩸 Effective Date: April 5, 2026
📄 References:
DOH Administrative Order No. 2026-0003
PRC Administrative Memo No. 6, Series of 2026

These adjustments cover the processing, testing, storage, and professional services necessary to ensure the safety and quality of blood and blood products for patients in need.

📌Why the change?
After a nationwide survey of 166 Blood Service Facilities (BSFs), it was determined that previous fee structures (set in 2015) no longer covered the rising costs of:
📍Essential testing and safety screenings
📍Storage and logistics
📍24/7 operational requirements

💡 All concerned are hereby advised to strictly comply with the approved rates. No additional fees shall be collected beyond what is authorized. We also encourage all partner institutions to disseminate this information to their respective departments to promote standardized pricing, transparency, and equitable access to safe blood services.

This update ensures that our blood facilities remain sustainable while maintaining the highest quality and safety standards for all patients.

𝘍𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘢 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘩—𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘢 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘴𝘦𝘵

As we observe Fire Prevention Month, the Philippine Red Cross reminds everyone that most fire incidents are preventable. It takes more than just a fire truck to save a neighborhood; it takes a community that knows the 4𝗣𝘀:

𝘗𝘙𝘌𝘋𝘐𝘊𝘛: Identify electrical hazards and gas leaks before they start.
𝘗𝘓𝘈𝘕: Map out at least two exit routes from your home.
𝘗𝘙𝘌𝘗𝘈𝘙𝘌: Keep fire extinguishers or water buckets accessible.
𝘗𝘙𝘈𝘊𝘛𝘐𝘊𝘌: Conduct a fire drill with your family tonight!

"We cannot afford to be complacent. Fire safety is a matter of discipline and vigilance. Be a leader in your community—predict the danger before it strikes and be ready to act! Fire safety starts with 𝘠𝘖𝘜." — Richard J. Gordon, PRC Chairman and CEO

Let’s keep our homes safe.

The Philippine Red Cross Sorsogon Chapter deployed its Welfare Team to conduct post-incident assessment and provide Welfare and Psychosocial Support to the family of the Two Casualties caused by the recent rock and land slide at Brgy. Bariis, Matnog, Sorsogon.

Sheryl Escober, Welfare/PSP Team Leader together with Paulo Juan Escueta and Bryan Gile, chapter-based volunteers and RC 143 Matnog Volunteer Evelyn Foster visited the incident area where they witness firsthand the aftermath of the landslide which happened at 1 AM this January 17, 2026.

Nearby the impact site, is the residence of Mrs. Gina Balasta, the aunt of the deceased individuals stated that the 19-Year-Old Female was here Niece and the 22-Year-Old Male was their adopted family member. It was devastating for her and their family given that the loss of the lives of the said individuals happened during their sleep in the house that they stayed in for ten years.

Our Welfare team provided Psychosocial Support and First Aid to the family members of the deceased.

PRC Sorsogon Team will continue its monitoring to the affected family and its AOR for any untoward incident that may happen.
