HOMILY | Monday of the 6th Week in Ordinary Time

Reading: James 1:1–11

St. James begins today with a line that can surprise us: “Consider it pure joy when you face trials.”

Joy and trials do not usually go together. When problems come, we feel stress, fear, and sometimes even anger. But St. James is not saying that suffering itself is good. He is telling us that God can use our trials to grow our faith.

1. Trials Do Not Break Faith — They Grow It

Think of how strength is developed. Muscles grow not when they are comfortable, but when they are stretched. Faith is the same. If faith is never tested, it remains shallow. But when faith goes through difficulties and still holds on to God, it becomes strong.

All of us carry burdens—illness, family concerns, financial worries, disappointments, and fears about the future. These trials test our faith, but they do not have to destroy us. When we trust God in the middle of hardship, perseverance grows, and perseverance shapes us into people who are more patient, wiser, and more compassionate.

A faith that has struggled and remained faithful becomes a mature faith.

2. When We Are Confused, God Invites Us to Ask

St. James gives very practical advice:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, ask God.”

God is not offended by our questions. He is not tired of hearing our worries. He invites us to come to Him, especially when we do not know what to do.

But St. James adds one condition: we must ask with trust. To doubt here does not mean having questions; it means refusing to trust God. It is praying while still insisting on controlling everything ourselves.

A divided heart—half trusting God, half relying only on ourselves—will always be restless. But when we truly trust God, even without clear answers, we experience peace.

Wisdom is not just intelligence. Wisdom is the grace to choose what is right, even when it is difficult.

3. Our True Worth Is Not in What We Have

St. James speaks to both the poor and the rich. The poor are reminded of their dignity. The rich are reminded of humility.

Our world measures success by money, status, and possessions. But St. James reminds us that these things do not last. Wealth fades, achievements pass, and titles come to an end.

What remains is who we are before God. Whether we have much or little, our true value comes from being children of God. And that identity remains, even when everything else is taken away.

Final Words

Brothers and sisters, today’s message is simple:
• Trials can strengthen our faith,
• God generously gives wisdom to those who trust Him,
• And our true worth is found not in possessions, but in God’s love.

Life may not become easier. But when we trust God, life becomes meaningful. And through our trials, God quietly shapes us into mature disciples.

BE THE CLOAK OF CHRIST | “Today’s Gospel is very simple, but very beautiful.

Jesus arrives in a place, and the people immediately recognize Him. And when they recognize Him, they don’t walk — they run.

They bring the sick. They carry them on mats. They beg Jesus, “Lord, even just to touch the edge of your cloak…”

And the Gospel says: all who touched Him were healed.

Notice something: Jesus did not preach.
Just His presence. And that presence was enough.

The people did not ask for explanations. They only wanted to be near Him. Because they believed that being close to Jesus changes something inside a person.

And they were right.

Today, many people around us are still like those sick people in the Gospel.

Not all are physically sick. But many are emotionally tired, mentally stressed, spiritually drained, burdened by worries, guilt, fear, and anxiety.

Many are still being carried on “mats.” And they are looking for Jesus.

But where can they touch Jesus today?

They touch Him through us.

But how does this happen?

Very simply.

When someone is confused and you listen patiently, something inside them settles.

When someone feels guilty and you do not judge, they begin to breathe again.

When someone is anxious and you speak calmly, their heart becomes calm.

When someone feels worthless and you treat them with respect, they regain their dignity.

When someone is lonely and you give time, they no longer feel alone.

That is healing.

Quiet. Ordinary. But real.

The people in the Gospel were healed because they touched the cloak of Christ.

Today, people are healed when they encounter someone who carries Jesus in the heart.

A listening ear.
A kind word.
A patient attitude.
A hopeful presence.

Through these simple things, people “touch” Jesus.

So the Gospel invites us to ask:

When people come near me, do they feel closer to God?

Because that is our mission — to be the cloak of Christ in the world, so that through us, wounded hearts may be healed.”

HOMILY | Tuesday of the 5th Week in Ordinary Time

Gospel: Mark 7:1–13

In the Gospel, the Pharisees complain to Jesus because His disciples do not observe the ritual washing of hands.

For them, this was a big religious violation.

But Jesus responds with words that go straight to the heart: “This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.”

The issue was not dirty hands. The issue was distant hearts. And this is still very relevant to us today.

Because sometimes, we can be very good inside the church, but very different outside the church.

As a reminder for all of us:

Faith is not only what we do in church.
Faith is what we do after church.

1. We can be religious… but not converted.

The Pharisees were very religious. They followed traditions carefully. They knew the rules by heart.

But Jesus says their hearts were far from God.

Today, we can:
• attend Mass every Sunday,
• pray novenas and rosaries,
• join processions and devotions…

and yet remain unchanged inside.

Because faith is not first about practices.
Faith is about transformation.

God is not impressed by routine.
God looks for a converted heart.

2. We sometimes prioritize rituals over relationships.

Jesus says: “You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.”

Sometimes, we are very strict with religious practices, but very weak in living out God’s commandments.

We are careful with rituals, but careless with kindness.

We are faithful in prayer, but unfaithful in forgiveness.

We behave well in church, but hurt people at home.

That is why this line is very important for us to remember:

Faith is not only what we do in church.
Faith is what we do after church.

Because the real test of faith begins when Mass ends.

3. The heart is the true place of worship.

The problem was never about washing hands. It was about cleansing the heart.

God looks not at our hands, but at our intentions.

Not at our lips, but at our attitudes.

Not at our appearance, but at our inner life.

A clean heart is more important than clean hands.

Final Words

Jesus is reminding us today: Do not let your faith remain inside the church building.

Bring it to your home.
Bring it to your workplace.
Bring it to your relationships.

Because in the end, God is not asking how religious we looked…

He will ask how loving we became.

Faith is not only what we do in church.
Faith is what we do after church.
