(Sea Turtle Conservation Protection Program) CURMA ETHICS:

Caring for all living entities.

Slogan: Respect, Responsibility, and Care in Action

CURMA aims to:

Cross barriers – Our lives are intertwined not only with other people but also with other living entities such as plants, birds, fish, and others. What we do affects others so we need to see the bigger picture of who we are and how we should live. Unify our efforts to make our life and work sustainable in a world of limited reso

urces. Reverse the dire effects on nature of our seemingly endless consumption. Motivate everyone to take only what is necessary and share any abundance. Understanding our role in the world is that of stewardship. Returning to Nature’s design and balance. Moving towards simplicity and selflessness. Adjusting to nature instead of making nature adjust to our wants.

Celebrating Earth Day with purpose 🌎🐢

A big thank you to DENR for inviting CURMA to be part of the Earth Day event here at SM La Union and for providing us a space to share our work. You’ve been our partners since the very beginning of this journey to protect sea turtles, coastlines, and the communities that care for them, and we’re grateful to continue this journey together.

Earth Day is a special reminder that we all share one planet, and every action we take matters.

Thank you to DENR Region 1 Executive Director Atty. Ronnel C. Sopsop, CESO IV, for leading the way.

We’re happy to have our Youth Ambassador Karlo Salazar take part in the opening program, sharing about CURMA and our collective efforts.

Happening until April 23, drop by SM La Union, swing past the CURMA booth, and dive into the movement to protect what matters most 🌊💚

Some people don’t just love the ocean - they quietly dedicate their lives to protecting it and inspiring others to do the same.💙

Edgar Espero was one of those people.

Born in Bacnotan, La Union, Edgar’s journey came full circle - finding his way back home and spending his later years along the shores of San Juan. A proud US Army veteran, his path took him across the world, including time in Hawaii, where he worked with organizations like Surfrider Foundation, Sustainable Coastlines, and Na K**a Kai Keiki Aloha - always guided by a deep care for the ocean and the communities around it.💚

At CURMA, we felt that same heart. Edgar would always show up - whether it was for beach cleanups or turtle releases - not just to take part, but to support, document, and share the story so more people could connect and care. He had a quiet way of lifting the work and the people behind it.

He was the kind of person who didn’t need recognition. He just kept going - creating, helping, bringing people together, always finding another way to make a difference.

Though Edgar has passed on, what he stood for continues to move through the people and communities he touched.

May we carry that forward - the simple but powerful act of showing up, caring deeply, and doing what we can.

Thank you, Edgar. 🙏❤️

Happy Birthday, Jessie Cabagbag!🎉

From once being a poacher and part of the very threats sea turtles face, to now leading their protection, your journey shows just how much a person can change when they find purpose.

Now as President of the fisherfolk association in Baroro Bacnotan, and easily one of the hardest working people we know, you lead by example every single day.

You’ve helped save thousands of turtle eggs, and what really stands out is how you’ve brought your whole family into this effort, protecting not just the turtles, but the coastline you all call home.💙

Because of you, more turtles have a chance, and more people are starting to care.

Grateful to be on this journey with you. 🙏❤️🐢

We get this question every day… “When is the next release?” 🐢

The honest answer is: we don’t know!

Nature decides. Not us.

Sea turtles emerge on their own time, and when they do, every minute matters. They enter a critical frenzy phase where their only instinct is to move quickly toward the ocean, past the most dangerous stretch of their lives - the beach and shallow waters.

Because of this, we can’t hold them, delay them, or schedule releases ahead of time. Our role is simply to be ready, to witness, and to give them the best possible chance at survival.💙

That’s why announcements are made about an hour before each release.

If you want to experience it, follow along and stay alert - it happens in nature’s time, not ours.

Most hatchlings emerge from late afternoon into the night, when the world is quieter and the odds are slightly in their favor.

And when it happens… it’s always worth the wait! ❤️🐢
