The International Day for Biological Diversity began with the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where world leaders adopted the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), a global agreement to protect life on Earth, use nature sustainably, and share its benefits fairly. It remains a call to safeguard the planetโ€™s living wealth.

The Philippines, one of the worldโ€™s megadiverse countries and part of a global biodiversity hotspot, is home to many species found nowhere else. In Mindoro, unique and endemic wildlife depend on remaining forest habitats that continue to face pressure from land-use change and degradation.

Through Thriving Together with Tamaraw, conservation efforts in Mindoro focus on protecting critical habitats, supporting Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ stewardship, and promoting coexistence between people and wildlife. It is a reminder that protecting biodiversity means protecting both nature and the communities that depend on it.

Mindoro is more than just an island. It is a sanctuary of life found nowhere else on Earth. From lush mangroves to dense forests to and winding rivers, it shelters species that exist only within its landscapes.

But today, many of these species are facing the risk of extinction. Habitat loss, hunting, and increasing human pressures continue to push them closer to the edge.

This ๐—˜๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฆ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐——๐—ฎ๐˜†, we are reminded that conservation is not just about saving wildlife. It is about protecting the ecosystems and communities that depend on them. Through Thriving Together with Tamaraw, we recognize that people and nature are deeply connected, and that a thriving Mindoro means a shared future for all.

The call is simple: protect habitats, support conservation efforts, and be part of the movement to ensure that Mindoroโ€™s wildlife continues to thrive.

โ€ Tapos isa-isa silang gumuguhit: may bahag, may kwako, may basket, may sulfa, may dongdong, may tulali, may kagubatan.

Dito mas lalong nakita ang kahalagahan ng ๐˜‰๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜ง๐˜ถ๐˜บ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ, hindi lang isang lugar, kundi isang buhay na learning hub.

Happy Labor Day!

Today, we celebrate the hands and hearts behind every step forward.

Some work begins before sunrise and ends long after dark. It happens on muddy trails, steep mountainsides, under the heat of the sun or in the middle of sudden rain. In the field, time is precious, resources are stretched, and every effort counts. Yet day after day, people continue the work with strength, patience, and purpose to protect communities, forests, and wildlife.

Beyond the field are those who keep everything moving quietly in the background, planning, organizing, coordinating, and making sure each task can happen when it needs to.

Today is for everyone whose dedication is often unseen but always felt. Thank you for the work you do, the challenges you carry, and the difference you make every single day. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’š

Through Dalaw-Turo sessions in Sitios Dapdap and Payompon in Sta Cruz, Occidental Mindoro, students, Indigenous communities, and conservation partners came together to learn and share. TAMA-KA-ALAMAN reflects the connection between wildlife, culture, and knowledge โ€” reminding us that conservation begins with understanding and collective action.

Most residents belong to the Alangan ethnolinguistic group, with some still living in upland areas of Inner Mindoro where the tamaraw persists. Through games, cultural performances, and discussions, participants deepened their understanding of biodiversity and conservation.

The activity was conducted in partnership with Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Occidental Mindoro through the DENR - Tamaraw Conservation Program Office (TCPO), and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) of Sta. Cruz LGU (MENRO Santa Cruz).

Together, we continue building awareness and inspiring communities to become stewards of Mindoroโ€™s natural heritage. ๐Ÿ’š

In Thriving Together with Tamaraw Consortium, women play vital roles across our work.

They lead in finance and administration, guide decision-making and leadership, support community engagement and capacity building, contribute to research and field activitties, and help shape policies that protect biodiversity.

Their dedication ensures that conservation is not only about protecting species and ecosystems, but also about building inclusive systems where voices are heard and rights are upheld.

As this yearโ€™s global call highlights the importance of access to justice and equality, we recognize that empowering women in conservation strengthens both communities and nature.

โœจ This month, we celebrate the women whose work, leadership, and commitment help conservation truly thrive.
