The Philippines is within the Top 10 of the World Economics Forum’s Gender Gap report, and the president has recently signed the Safe Spaces Act. This is ironic as the president himself does not seem to respect women.

Duterte encourages military to r**e women in Marawi, joking that “he will take responsibility,”. Although these are, to him, “jokes”, words are powerful and often influence others, especially coming from the nations president.

The song Boys Don’t Cry by the English rock band, The Cure, is about a boy’s desire to express his emotions. However, since he was taught that boys shouldn’t cry, he therefore has difficulties in doing so.

It’s high time we educate boys and men that it’s okay for them to show emotions, and that doing so doesn’t decrease their masculinity.

In relation to the previous movie clip, many individuals suffer from workplace sexism. Women in workplaces are considered weak and vulnerable while men are considered the alphas of the industry.

In other cases, men are categorized unfit for some jobs like preschool teachers, secretaries, librarians, nurse, etc. Men are always expected to have a business type or a masculine type of job, while women are expected to have a more feminine job.

In one way or another, regardless of gender, we have been victims of sexism. If we look closely, it is so normalized that we don’t even realize that we are being subjected to it. We live through these stereotypes everyday which makes it hard to grasp how prevalent this is.

We are Alpas and we aim to educate on the issue of sexism. It is time to bring out our inner warrior and together, we can break free and fight against the stereotypes that society has brought upon us.
