The rains are coming, and we’re scared.
(Short Story)

Our neighborhood has a small creek that’s supposed to carry rainwater away—but it’s clogged with trash and blocked by something no one wants to talk about.

We wanted to clean it up. We made plans, talked to neighbors, even found volunteers to help. We went to our community leader—we thought he’d be thrilled. He’d always said “A clean creek means no floods for us all.”

But he shut us down fast. “Too busy right now,” he said. “We’ll do it later.”

Later never came. And then we saw why: his house juts right over the creek. Pillars sunk deep into the water, walls built where the current should flow. It’s not allowed by law—but he’s the one who’s supposed to enforce the rules.

Last night, the rain poured hard. Water backed up from the blocked creek and rushed into our homes. Kids’ school things were ruined, old folks had to be carried to higher ground. Even parts of his own yard were underwater.

We’re sharing this not to point fingers, but to say: Our creeks are for EVERYONE. No one should be allowed to block them—especially not those who are meant to look out for us.
