'WORKERS ON THE FRONT PAGE'

The National Confederation of Barangay Health Workers of the Philippines (NCBHWP) and UNI Global Union–Philippine Liaison Council (UNI-PLC) expressed dissatisfaction over the fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

In a joint statement released Thursday, the two groups said they were dismayed by the non-mention of the Magna Carta of Barangay Health Workers in Marcos' SONA.

The groups said, however, that they welcomed a formal response from Malacañang acknowledging their joint appeal on the issue and referring it to the Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (Ledac) for appropriate action.

They said Malacañang acknowledged the vital role of barangay health workers in primary healthcare delivery and recognized their long-standing aspirations for fair compensation, benefits, and legal protection.

'SOLIDARITY WITH OUR BARANGAY HEALTH WORKERS'

“The global labor movement stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the 277,000 community health workers in the Philippines as they demand basic dignity and formal protection. Referring this appeal to the policy council is a positive step, but words must turn into binding action. We urge Secretary Balisacan and the council to officially prioritize the Magna Carta so these essential workers finally get the legal rights they have earned over four decades of selfless service.” — Rajendra Acharya, Regional Secretary of UNI Asia & Pacific

'HISTORIC WIN IN THE SENATE FOR OUR BARANGAY HEALTH WORKERS'

UNI-PLC and the National Confederation of Barangay Health Workers of the Philippines (NCBHWP) celebrate the Senate's unanimous third reading approval of Senate Bill No. 1905, the Magna Carta of Barangay Health Workers!

This landmark measure provides essential benefits for our 277,000 community health frontliners, including a mandatory monthly honorarium, hazard pay, GSIS coverage, civil service eligibility, and regular plantilla opportunities.

The ball is now in the court of the House of Representatives. We challenge our lawmakers in the House to fast-track their counterpart bill and pass it without delay! ✊

'WORKERS ON THE FRONT PAGE'

Labor groups on Sunday condemned the issuance of a temporary restraining order on the P85 minimum wage hike in Metro Manila, calling it a blow to workers and an overreach that sets a dangerous precedent for future wage relief.

The Pasig Regional Trial Court Branch 152 on Thursday granted a TRO on the implementation of NCR Wage Order No. 27, which raises wages in tranches of P60 this month and P25 next January.

UNI Global Union – Philippine Liaison Councils and the UNITED BPO Workers of the Philippines stressed Sunday that proceedings under the National Wages and Productivity Commission or regional wage boards are not subject to court injunctions.

"Labor laws were designed precisely to prevent this kind of judicial interference,” UNI-PLC president Roland De La Cruz said.

The group noted the “extraordinary disregard” of the rights of the over 1.1 million workers who will benefit from the wage hike, adding that the suspension "inflicted the gravest irreparable injury to those who have the least in life.”

'PROTECT WORKERS' WAGES'

UNI-PLC General Secretary Rainier Cruz calls on DOLE Secretary Francis Tolentino to firmly assert the department's mandate and defend workers' wages against regular court interference.

Workers cannot suffer further while trial courts usurp functions that belong strictly to labor authorities! ✊

'MAGNA CARTA OF BARANGAY HEALTH WORKERS PASSES THIRD AND FINAL READING IN SENATE'

History in the making! UNI-PLC and the National Confederation of Barangay Health Workers of the Philippines (NCBHWP) were at the Senate plenary earlier today to witness the momentous passing of the Magna Carta of Barangay Health Workers on its third and final reading! ✊

Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to our champions in the Senate—Sen. JV Ejercito, Senator Risa Hontiveros , and Sen. B**g Go—for standing firmly with our 277,000 community health workers nationwide and championing this crucial legislation!

Now, the fight shifts to the House of Representatives! We respectfully call on our lawmakers in the House to fast-track their counterpart bill so our BHWs can finally receive the fair compensation and legal protections they have long deserved! 💪

'DAGDAG SAHOD NAMIN, HUWAG AGAWIN!'

UNI affiliates National Federation of Labor and Unified Filipino Service Workers - UFSW, together with the Nagkaisa Labor Coalition and Kamanggagawa Partylist, formally filed today, August 3, an Urgent Motion to Intervene and Motion to Lift/Dissolve the Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) that suspended Metro Manila's ₱85 minimum wage increase at the Pasig City Regional Trial Court Branch 152.

Accompanying the legal action, our unions joined over 200 workers in a protest march and rally outside the courthouse to condemn the illegal TRO.

We stand firmly with our affiliates and the entire labor movement in calling out this judicial overreach—working-class families cannot be denied their statutory wage relief! ✊

'A DANGEROUS PRECEDENT'

UNI-PLC President and UNITED BPO Co-Convenor Roland De La Cruz warns that allowing regular courts to stall the ₱85 NCR wage hike sets a dangerous precedent—blocking statutory relief and leaving thousands of working families to bear the brunt of rising costs.

Labor laws exist to protect workers' earnings, not to give regular courts a way to freeze them! ✊
