UNITY STATEMENT OF LGBTQIA+ ORGANIZATIONS AGAINST CORRUPTION

While bureaucrats fight over public funds, ordinary Filipinos — including LGBTQIA+ Filipinos — are left to suffer.

Dapat panagutin ang lahat ng korap, starting from the top! MARCOS AND DUTERTE, GET GET OUT!

It is not a simple “regime change” that we need; we need a system change now!

MAGKAISA LABAN SA KATIWALIAN! SUMALI SA SEPTEMBER 21!
We enjoin all LGBTQIA+ advocates to join us this September 21, 9am at Luneta Park and across the country to march against corruption! This September 21, let us also : Bongbong Marcos’ entire political career was built on his late dictator father’s ill-gotten wealth of up to PHP 3 trillion pesos stolen from the people.

There is no gender equality without humanity. There is no humanity without transparency, justice, and accountability.

LGBTQIA+ community at bayan: kumilos tayo!

National LGBTQI+ alliance Bahaghari leads hundreds in march to the Mendiola Peace Arch to hold the first-ever Stonewall Philippines, a grassroots-led Pride event, which this 2025 will highlight the campaign to pass the SOGIESC Equality Bill and other pro-LGBTQ+ and pro-people reforms, as well as a condemnation of the ongoing genocide of Palestine and the US’ unjust bombing of Iran.

“Today, we lead Stonewall Philippines as a reminder that Pride is, first and foremost, a protest. At mula ngayon, gugunitain natin bawat taon ang June 26: Araw ng Sangkabaklaang Anakpawis,” shared Reyna Valmores Salinas, Bahaghari’s chairperson and founder of Stonewall Philippines.

“This year, Stonewall Philippines will raise awareness on the plight of the LGBTQ+ community. 3 years into Marcos Jr.’s presidency, the SOGIESC Equality Bill continues to languish. Pro-people reforms also remain stalled, including the proposed minimum wage hike to P1,200/day. Instead, Marcos Jr. has prioritized anti-people policies, including raising taxes on the poor while providing tax incentives for the rich, and expanding US EDCA military sites in the Philippines," continued Valmores Salinas.

It could be remembered that in 2020, US soldier Joseph Scott Pemberton, killer of trans woman Jennifer Laude, was provided absolute pardon. Pemberton was notably present in the Philippines for US military exercises.

“Pride is also a time to raise our voices not only on issues plaguing the LGBTQ+ community in the Philippines, but worldwide. Today, with the US under the leadership of the hyper-conservative Donald Trump, there is a global rollback on LGBTQ+ rights. It is straight out of the fascist playbook to create an artificial enemy out of minorities: migrants, Muslims, and now the LGBTQ+ community, as fascist governments distract from economic crises, destitute social welfare, and warmongering. This is what we are seeing now, as the US conducts bombings on Iran in blatant violation of international law,” Valmores Salinas explained.

“There is no Pride in imperialist war and genocide. The continued mass murder of our siblings in Palestine, the US bombing of Iran simply because Iran stood up for Palestine, and even the rarely-reported artillery shelling and strafing of peasant and indigenous communities all the way here, in the Philippines, are all part and parcel of the US imperialist agenda, one which hurts women, children, and the LGBTQ+ community most of all," the trans woman leader explained.

Bahaghari promises Stonewall Philippines to be an annual Pride action "as long as harsh conditions remain."

"This will not be the first or last Stonewall Philippines. Mama Allan Tolosa, Fr. Richard Mickley and dozen other gay rights activists who led the first Pride march in the country and Asia Pacific marched against discrimination, value-added tax, and oil price hike. We pay homage to their legacy by continuing to stand up against injustices committed not only to the Filipino LGBTQ+ community but to the broad Filipino masses. # # #

𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐏 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐒 𝐊𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒: Bahaghari calls for urgent investigation on death of Kierra Apostol

“Our hearts are heavy to receive reports of the brutal death of Kierra Apostol, a trans woman found lifeless in Cagayan River after reportedly missing for a few days. We demand to authorities a full and thorough investigation on her brutal passing," stated Reyna Valmores Salinas, the group's Chairperson.

"While we await final reports, we can say that this is another harrowing case of violence against Filipino trans women. This is further proof that LGBTQ+ persons in the Philippines remain unsafe amid talks of ‘tolerance’ in our society. Kierra could've been celebrating with her community in Cagayan this Pride month, but her life was cut short due to hate perpetuated by a macho-patriarchal culture," the trans woman leader continued.

"Kierra’s case is an urgent reminder to pass the SOGIESC Equality Bill, which will provide legal remedies against acts of discrimination," Valmores Salinas concluded. # # #

QUEZON CITY — National LGBTQI+ alliance Bahaghari condemned the unjust killing of Ali Macalintal, a trans woman human rights advocate and media professional.

According to reports, she was gunned down by an unknown suspect while in a spa establishment in General Santos City, South Cotabato. She was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

"Ali was a steadfast and outspoken human rights advocate. She joined the Lakbayan ng Pambansang Minorya in 2017 to stand with Moro and Lumad people against attacks on their communities. She was also part of a fact-finding mission in Lebak, Sultan Kudarat during the height of Duterte's Martial Law in Mindanao. She even sought to organize Bahaghari in Mindanao. She was never afraid to speak truth to power and expose uncomfortable truths,” stated Reyna Valmores Salinas, Bahaghari’s chairperson.

“The brutal killing of Ali is emblematic of the situation of media workers and the state of press freedom in the Philippines. The Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) has recorded a 44% increase on attacks against media workers from 1 July 2022 to 30 April 2025, logging a whopping number of 184 cases. Of those, 78 or 42% involved State actors. It has also not escaped our notice the continued censorship on alternative media outfits and unjust imprisonment of Frenchie Mae Cumpio. Ali was the 7th media professional killed since the Marcos Jr. administration, although only five were media work-related," continued Valmores Salinas.

“We lost a powerful voice in advancing LGBTQ+ rights in the country. Ali’s bravery will not be forgotten by the community during Pride month," the trans woman leader declared.

Bahaghari urges swift, impartial investigation from authorities. "We urge the General Santos City Police to further investigate the killing of Ali. If it is indeed related to her previous work as activist and media professional, her perpetrators must be named and held accountable. Hindi pwedeng isalawang-bahala ang pagpaslang kay Ali! On the upcoming Stonewall Philippines on 26 June 2025, ang sigaw ng LGBTQ+ community: hustisya para kay Ali Macalintal. Likewise, BBM must be held responsible for the continuing inaction on the clampdown and violence faced by media workers. He must be held to account for the worsening state of press freedom in the country,” Valmores Salinas concluded. # # #

We are 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐏𝐇𝐈𝐋𝐈𝐏𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐒, a grassroots-led network of Pride marches in the Philippines! 🌈

We are built on a shared commitment to Pride as a political act — a continued resistance against the deepening social and economic injustices that affect both the LGBTQ+ community and the Filipino people.

On June 26, 1994, the Progressive Organization of G**s in the Philippines (ProGay Philippines) and the Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC) led Stonewall Manila, a march for broad social issues, from gender-based discrimination to the imposition of VAT and oil price hikes. Stonewall Manila sparked Pride in the Philippines and the Asia Pacific.

Pride is a celebration. More than this, it is an act of resistance, a platform for collective struggle, and a call to action in solidarity with all oppressed peoples in the Philippines. LGBTQIA+ liberation is inseparable from the liberation of the Filipino people.
