UP GEOP proudly congratulates its alumni for being recognized in the 𝐔𝐏 𝐃𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐟 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 held in celebration of the College of Engineering’s 116th Founding Anniversary. ✨

𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐫. 𝐌𝐚. 𝐁𝐞𝐚 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐚 𝐈. 𝐙𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐚 received the Limcaoco Young Instructor Award for Teaching Excellence. Engr. Zamora served as UP GEOP’s adviser during AY ‘25-’26. She also previously served as the organization’s President (‘19-’20), Executive Vice President (‘18-’19), and Officer-in-Charge for Publicity (‘18-’19).

𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐭. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐌𝐚. 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐎. 𝐀𝐧𝐠 was granted two distinctions: the Outstanding Junior Engineering Professor and Outstanding Junior Engineering Researcher (Asst. Prof) Awards.

UP GEOP warmly congratulates 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐫. 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐨𝐥𝐨 𝐈. 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐣𝐞, one of UP GEOP’s founding members, for being elected as the 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 of the Geodetic Engineers of the Philippines (GEP) Region VI.

𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐏 𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐒: 𝐌𝐀𝐉𝐎𝐑 𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄 𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐊𝐄𝐏𝐎𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐒 🚢📦🌊

Global commerce relies on the narrow channels along widely used global shipping routes known as chokepoints. Because of their restricted width and high traffic density, they are extremely vulnerable to blockades, accidents, or military conflicts, which the world is experiencing right now. Rising fuel costs in the Philippines are not just a national economic issue, but also an effect of this larger geopolitically influenced dispute that has destabilized many of these major maritime routes, consequently constraining the transportation of fuel. The war initiated by the US and Israel against Iran has led the latter to prohibit entry to the Strait of Hormuz, the most important maritime chokepoint for large crude oil tankers across the world. Blockage through a chokepoint may lead to rerouting, which can eventually cause interruption and an increase in the cost of fuel transport.

From 2020 to 2023, the Strait of Malacca, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Cape of Good Hope accounted for about 30%, 27%, and 9% of the transported average volume of crude oil and petroleum liquids in the world. During the same period, the Philippines imported an average of 216,000 TJ of crude oil and 616,000 TJ of its total oil products, reflecting its dependence on oil imports. Additionally, the most recent data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration says that approximately 76% of the global total oil supply in the first half of 2025 came from the world maritime oil trade, which passes through various chokepoints.

This map shows the global network of maritime shipping routes and the critical chokepoints that govern most of the international trade movements. By visualizing the density of these primary routes, the map identifies high-stakes bottlenecks such as the Panama Canal, Suez Canal, and the Straits of Malacca and Hormuz, which all serve as vital valves for global commerce. It also highlights the physical vulnerability of these narrow maritime routes and how their condition is a requirement for global stability. The ongoing war proves that even a local conflict in a specific chokepoint can paralyze the whole global supply chain and impose lasting damage even if a ceasefire is reached.
