The current controversies surrounding the Duterte family have understandably and deservingly drawn public attention, from the ๐ถ๐บ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ต๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐ ๐ฎ๐ด๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ ๐๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ผ ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ณ๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ, ๐ฅ๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ด๐ผ ๐๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฒโ๐ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ถ๐ป ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐ด๐๐ฒ, ๐ก๐ฒ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐, ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ผ๐ป๐ด๐ผ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐ ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐๐. We hope that both cases continue through due process and ultimately hold them accountable, so that the Filipino people are finally given the justice they deserve.
However, as these developments take public attention, we must ๐ป๐ผ๐ ๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ผ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ถ๐๐๐๐ฒ๐ ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ ๐ณ๐ฎ๐บ๐ถ๐น๐ ๐๐ผ ๐ฏ๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ด๐ผ๐๐๐ฒ๐ป.
Just this year, the Sandiganbayan dismissed the remaining government claims seeking to recover alleged ill-gotten wealth from the Marcos family after the PCGG said it had no further evidence to present, noting that most of the properties involved had already been recovered through separate cases [1]. The Supreme Court also acquitted Imelda Marcos of her criminal graft charges after finding that the prosecution failed to establish her guilt beyond reasonable doubt. This ruling, however, is separate from the civil proceedings concerning ill-gotten wealth and does not resolve those cases [2].
More recently, the case of Martin Romualdez, cousin of Ferdinand Marcos Jr., has brought another issue into focus: ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฟ๐ผ๐น๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ต๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐ถ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ท๐๐๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฒ. After his arrest over a plunder case, Romualdez was initially confined in a hospital, ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ ๐๐ฒ ๐ต๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ป ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ ๐๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น ๐ผ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฝ๐ผ๐น๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐๐. The Sandiganbayan later ordered an independent medical assessment at PGH, whose director reported that Romualdez was clinically stable and no longer needed hospital confinement. He was subsequently transferred to the Quezon City Jail [3].
So why is it that when ordinary Filipinos need healthcare, they ๐๐๐ฟ๐๐ด๐ด๐น๐ฒ ๐๐ผ ๐ฎ๐ณ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฑ ๐ถ๐, ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐๐ ๐ถ๐, ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ป ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ต ๐ถ๐, and yet when ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ณ๐๐น ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ผ๐ฝ๐น๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป, ๐ต๐ผ๐๐ฝ๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐น๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐น๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ท๐ฎ๐ถ๐น?
๐๐๐๐ก๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ง๐ ๐จ๐๐ค๐ช๐ก๐ ๐๐ ๐ ๐ง๐๐๐๐ฉ, ๐ฃ๐ค๐ฉ ๐ ๐จ๐๐๐๐ก๐ ๐๐ง๐ค๐ข ๐๐๐๐ค๐ช๐ฃ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ก๐๐ฉ๐ฎ.
We recognize that healthcare must never be denied to anyone. But at the same time, ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐๐ ๐๐ผ ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ต๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐บ๐๐๐ ๐ป๐ผ๐ ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ ๐ฎ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐น๐ฒ๐ด๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐ผ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต ๐ฝ๐ผ๐น๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ผ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ณ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฒ๐. This is especially important in a country where access to healthcare remains a struggle for many Filipinos. Families continue to face the costs of hospitalization, medicines, and other medical needs, while our public hospitals and healthcare workers continue to carry heavy workload and demands without proper support and compensation.
This is why, as we commemorate Martial Law, we cannot treat its history as something confined to the past. The declaration of Martial Law in 1972 marked the beginning of a period in which political power became increasingly unchecked, and calls for accountability were suppressed. We remember ๐ป๐ผ๐ ๐ผ๐ป๐น๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐บ๐ถ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฑ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ผ๐ฑ, ๐ฏ๐๐ ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ผ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ฝ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐๐ ๐๐ผ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ด๐ป๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ถ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ผ๐๐ป๐๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐๐ ๐ถ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฑ.
With all the controversies surrounding both the Duterte and Marcos families, ๐๐ฒ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ณ๐๐๐ฒ ๐๐ผ ๐น๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐ ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ฎ๐บ๐ถ๐น๐ ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ป ๐ฎ๐ป๐ผ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ณ๐ฎ๐บ๐ถ๐น๐โ๐ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฑ ๐ถ๐ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ด๐ผ๐๐๐ฒ๐ป. One political dynastyโs actions cannot excuse anotherโs, and accountability should never depend on which family currently holds our attention.

It will never change the fact that grave abuses were committed during the Marcos dictatorship.
