Edjop (2026) showed the nuances of student activism that are rarely explored or addressed. Told through a compelling dual and non-linear narrative way of storytelling, the film offers a fresh perspective on the story of Edjop during the time of the Martial Law. It poses a stark contrast between the heroic activism of Edjop and his daughter, Joyette’s apolitical nature.

A striking part in the movie for me was Edjop and his father’s confrontation regarding Edjop’s activism. Parents are often afraid of their children becoming activists due to the dangers and risks that come with it. This film makes audiences understand that people always fight for a cause. Activism is necessary when the times call for it. As symbolized by Joyette in the film, many Filipino people are indifferent towards politics and sociopolitical issues. Filipinos have become passive, they know issues but don’t grasp the gravity of it. The film excellently portrays and addresses this current problem.

Edjop (2026) asks us why we must remember and makes us remember. It is a film that challenges us to face the past head on and pass the baton of strength and hope to the next generation.

Before watching the film, one question has probably come to the minds of many Filipinos, just as it did mine in the past: Why bother? Why bother fighting a war we keep losing? Why bother remembering if a million others don’t? Why bother fighting at all?

Edjop (2026) explores this in multitudes. In the perspective of an activist, Edgar Jopson, who once dreamt of a bloodless fight but was forced to choose to shoot or be shot. In the experience of an athlete in Joyette Jopson that took pride in her country as she races but denies the importance of activism. In the pain of parents that worries for the safety of their children and in the grief of a family that lost their loved ones.

Yet, Edjop did not answer this question. It changes it. It transforms it. “Why Do You Fight?”

Just as Edjop fought for the future of his family. Joyette is fighting to honor and remember her father and all the lives who fought and were lost in the fight for justice. By the end of the film, you will also find yourself, just as I did, wondering, “why do I fight?”

Ang Edjop (2026) ni Katski Flores ay isang pelikulang kinakailangang mapanood ng bawat Pilipino. Ipinapakita rito ang kwento at buhay ni Edgar Jopson mula sa pagiging aktibista, rebolusyonaryo, at taga-UG. Lahat nang ito ay isinasalaysay mula sa lente ng kaniyang anak na si Joyette. Maganda ang paggamit ng paghahambing sa maraming kaibahan sa paraan ng pamumuhay ni Edjop at ni Joyette. Ipinapakita ang buhay ng isang atleta at isang aktibista, parehong naghihirap at nag-aalay ng dugo’t pawis upang manalo. Inihahambing ang pagpili sa tahimik na buhay at ang pagpili sa buhay na puno ng ingay at kaguluhan. Maganda rin ang paggamit ng metapora ng pagtakbo at relay race. Sa istoryang ito, hindi lamang baton ang ipinapasa, ipinagpapaubaya, at ipinagkakatiwala sa kakampi, kundi buhay at pag-asa rin ng mga susunod pang henerasyon.

Hindi lamang ito kwento ni Edjop at kwento ng nakaraan, bagkus ito ay kwento ng bawat pilipinong namumuhay pa rin sa bansang pinamumugaran pa rin ng panganib at mga mapang-abuso. Ito ay pelikula ng katapangan, pagmamahal, at pag-asa.

We call on parents and on schools to teach their young the hard lessons of that period so that if it occurs again, they will know that resistance is the only answer.
