Around 80 billion pieces of new clothing are bought every year. Did you know we are buying 60% more clothing now than we did in the early 2000’s? This dramatic increase has been accelerated by the development of “fast fashion”, a business model focused on low prices and fast-paced trends.

But what does this mean for the planet?

The fashion industry is the second-largest industrial polluter, accounting for about 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions. And on top of that, depending on the fabric, just one t-shirt can require 2700 litres of water. That’s about as much as you drink in two and a half years!

The best way to reduce the impacts of textiles is to reduce the overproduction of textile items in the first place. You can help by doing just like Earthly and try more slow fashion habits!

If you’re interested, you can find more information on textiles in our online Industrial Innovation course at climatescience.org!

Yesterday, we have reached our "Earth Overshoot Day."

This means that we have already spent our yearly budget for taking from the Earth (to remain sustainable) only halfway through the year.

What do you think this means for our future? Let us know in the comment section.

As of today - 28 July 2022 - humanity has used as much of the world’s resources that we can sustainably use in a year. In other words, we’ve already reached our yearly budget for taking from the Earth - and it’s only July! We call this grim milestone “Earth Overshoot Day”.⁣

These are the resources we’ve already used up for the year [1]:⁣
🌲 Forests (through deforestation)⁣
🐟 Fisheries (through overfishing)⁣
🍛 Food (through food waste and harmful farming)⁣
✈️ Air (through carbon emissions)⁣

Since the day was first calculated in the 1970s, Earth Overshoot Day has been arriving earlier and earlier each year, as global consumption continues to increase [3]. ⁣

In that time, cumulative “ecological debt” from global overshoot has built to the equivalent of 18 years - in other words, we have used 18 years’ worth of resources too many [3]. ⁣

We can't be happier to announce that President of EARTHDAY.ORG, Kathleen Rogers is now one of the Finals Judges for the ClimateScience Olympiad 2022.
Kathleen, a seasoned environmental attorney, and advocate led EARTHDAY.ORG to grow into a global year-round policy and activist organization with an international professional staff. She has been at the vanguard of developing campaigns and programs focused on diversifying the environmental movement, highlighted by Campaign for Communities (C4C) and Billion Acts of Green.
Her vast experience in mobilizing the communities for environmental justice will ensure that the participants' solutions are judged from a social perspective. We believe that interacting with Kathleen would be an amazing opportunity for young climate leaders from around the world.
