West Philippine Sea Promoting Peace in "West Philippine Sea Atin Ito Campaign"

A day after the removal, a new Chinese research vessel was already monitored near Bajo de Masinloc, operating less than a nautical mile from the shoal.

The Philippines' maritime rights are protected — the DFA is right about that. But
the bigger question the June 16 BBNJ debate raises is one every Filipino should
be asking: Are we moving with the urgency this moment demands? Justice
Carpio built the legal case that gave us the 2016 Arbitral Award. When he raises
a sovereignty flag, the answer should be engagement — not dismissal. The
West Philippine Sea requires every credentialed voice, every instrument, and
every institution working at full speed. That is what a sovereign nation looks like.

Statement of the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea
17 June 2026 | Manila, Philippines

Based on the latest Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) patrols and monitoring conducted by Philippine authorities this morning, 17 June 2026, the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea has confirmed the removal of the floating platform previously monitored within the lagoon of Bajo de Masinloc.

It will be recalled that the Philippines lodged a formal diplomatic protest against its presence soon after it was detected. While we take note of the removal, we reiterate our principled and unyielding position: Bajo de Masinloc is and will always be an integral part of Philippine territory.

The Philippines has indivisible, incontrovertible and longstanding sovereignty over Bajo de Masinloc exercised through its continuous, uninterrupted sovereignty and jurisdiction as demonstrated by detailed surveys, official government correspondences, cartographic records and consistent acts of administration that have gone uninterrupted for centuries. Only the Philippines has the right to place or construct structures and conduct activities, including marine scientific research, in Bajo de Masinloc and its territorial sea.

The NTF WPS, through the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine Coast Guard, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, and other relevant agencies will continue to conduct regular maritime patrols, maritime domain awareness operations, and lawful presence activities in and around Bajo de Masinloc.

We demand that all foreign entities abide by international law and cease actions that infringe upon Philippine sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction.

The Philippines remains fully committed to protecting its territorial integrity, upholding the rules-based international order, and defending its legitimate entitlements.

During a routine patrol in the West Philippine Sea, BRP Diego Silang issued several calm radio challenges to a Chinese warship found inside the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, repeatedly asking its purpose, a normal, lawful step to assert our maritime rights and protect the livelihoods that depend on these waters, even as the foreign vessel refused to respond and a China Coast Guard ship loitered nearby.

The Pattern Continues: When the Philippines Enforces the Law, China Objects

Sanctions do not change the facts.

The Philippines will continue to enforce its laws, protect its people, and safeguard its national security. The actions taken against illegal operations in the country—including those with documented immigration, safety, and security violations—were carried out through lawful processes and pursuant to Philippine law.

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has consistently upheld the principle that no foreign entity, regardless of nationality, is above Philippine law. Efforts to dismantle illegal networks operating on our soil are not acts of discrimination—they are acts of sovereignty.

A strong nation enforces its laws. A sovereign nation protects its people. The Philippines will continue to do both.

“China’s sanctions aim to intimidate, but the message is clear: defending Philippine sovereignty and our seas is a constitutional duty, and no foreign ban can stop that.”
