The Cordillerans, often collectively referred to as "Igorots" (meaning "people of the mountain"), are composed of various ethnolinguistic groups primarily inhabiting the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) in Northern Luzon, Philippines. While "Igorot" is a common umbrella term, many prefer to be called by their specific tribal names.
The major ethnolinguistic groups of the Cordillerans include:
* Bontoc: Found in the central and eastern portions of Mountain Province.
* Ibaloy (also Ibaloi, Nabaloi): Primarily in the southern part of Benguet, eastern La Union, and western Nueva Vizcaya.
* Ifugao: Inhabiting Ifugao Province, known for their rice terraces.
* Isnag (also Isneg or Apayao): Residing in Apayao Province.
* Itneg (also Tinguian): Primarily found in Abra Province.
* Kalinga: Predominantly in Kalinga Province.
* Kankanaey (Kankanai): Located in Western Mountain Province, northern Benguet, and southeastern Ilocos Sur.
* Kalanguya (also Kallahan and Ikalahan): Found in eastern Benguet, Ifugao, northwestern Nueva Vizcaya, and northern Nueva Ecija.
* Ga'dang: Also listed among the ethnolinguistic groups.
* Iwak: Another group mentioned in some classifications.
It's important to note that within these major groups, there are often further subgroups and distinctions based on dialect, traditions, and specific territories.
