At Phlourish, we believe that children haveโ innate strengths, potential, and the ability to grow into confident, healthy individuals who can lead flourishing lives.
We also recognize that children thrive when they live in environments that are safe, nurturing, and supportiveโspaces where they are listened to, understood, and guided, especially in expressing and managing difficult emotions instead of being shamed for feeling hurt, anxious, or โdepressed.โ
When children are repeatedly told, especially by figures of authority, that they are โweakโ for expressing emotions, the message can have far-reaching consequences. At a larger scale, it may contribute to internalized stigma, emotional suppression, and barriers to help-seeking, all of which โmay further increase vulnerability to mental health challenges.
This makes it all the more important to understand the current context our children live in today. Their challenges are different and often more complex than those we faced. Many young people navigate pressures from technology, social expectations, economic uncertainty, and long-standing social problems that remain unresolved. Recognizing this reality is essential if we are to acknowledge children's lived experiences and support their mental health in meaningful ways.
As we work to strengthen childrenโs mental well-being, we must always see each child within their broader psychosocial and environmental context. Truly, a childโs sense of well-being cannot flourish in environments shaped by shame or stigma. It grows whenโ we ensure that they feel valuedโ and supportedโโas part of a larger commitment to upholding their rights.
