Celebrating Soroptimist Week
August 24-31 2026

The Legacy of Mariquita S. Castelo

Mariquita Castelo (born August 30, 1912) was a monumental figure in civic service and women's empowerment in the Philippines.

In 1964, while studying social work at the University of California, she met the president of the Soroptimist Federation of the Americas. Inspired by their mission, she worked to establish the very first club in the country, the Soroptimist Club of Greater Manila, chartered on May 5, 1966.

Thanks to her leadership, the organization grew rapidly across the archipelago. Today, the Soroptimist encompasses dozens of volunteer clubs dedicated to providing women and girls access to education.

Before her Soroptimist work, she served as the first National Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines!
