Kagitingan Odd Fellows Lodge No. 12 The roots of Odd Fellowship are believed to begin as far back as 587 B.C. in mutual relief groups such as guilds. Life was tough, often lawless and desperate.

An Odd Fellows Lodge composed mostly of uniformed personnel from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, Philippine Navy, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Marines, Philippine Airforce and others... The oldest documentation of "Odd Fellows" was a mention of Aristarchus Lodge #9 in 1748. Nearly 300 years ago in England, people were facing a lot of challenges. Medicine w

as still crude and in a primitive stage. Life expectancy was about 45 to 50. There were lots of sickness, orphaned kids, widowed mothers and many people cannot afford to pay a descent burial for the dead. So, ordinary people from different trades and walks of life found it necessary to group together as brothers and contribute some of their hard-earned wages to a common fund which they could use for unfortunate times such as sickness, losing a job and even death. They would work together to help each other and the unfortunate families back on their feet, whether it was rebuilding a barn that had burned or putting in a new crop after a devastating season. Such altruistic and friendly society came to be known as “Odd Fellows” probably because they consisted of people from different Odd trades and at that time, it was odd to find people organized for the purpose of giving aid to those in need and of pursuing projects for the benefit of all mankind. Odd Fellows are also known as “The Three Link Fraternity” which stands for Friendship, Love and Truth. The History of Odd Fellows in the Philippines
Evolving from the traditions of the craft guilds in England, the Odd Fellows was first founded over 250 years ago. Our branch, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.), was organized on the North American continent on April 26, 1819. The Odd Fellows first spread in the Philippines in 1872 with numerous military lodges, Odd Fellows Clubs and Odd Fellow Associations established across the islands. When the Spanish-Filipino-American war ended, the I.O.O.F. officially chartered "Manila Lodge no.1" in Manila on January 29, 1903 composed of the government officials, military men and prominent businessmen. The lodge owned a building and the state finances was equally healthy and in sound condition. Manila Encampment No.1 and Luzon Lodge No.2 followed when it was chartered on June 12,1912 and October 8, 1917. Unfortunately, Japan occupied the Philippines during World War II at the beginning of 1941. For how many years, Filipino guerrillas and American soldiers fought together against the Japanese up until 1944 when Japan finally surrendered. Over a million Filipinos had been killed in the war and many towns and cities, including Manila, were left in ruins. Noting the situation, the activities of the fraternity were definitely abandoned and the lodge hall or meeting place of the Odd Fellows in Manila was most likely destroyed. Since then, the Odd Fellows was never heard in the country anymore. On August 23, 1985, a different group called "Watchdog Committee" was founded but somehow lost its purposes and direction. Eventually, Watchdog Committee merged with the Odd Fellows and was chartered by the Sovereign Grand Lodge as "Watchdog Lodge No.1" on November 21, 2009. The goal of the newly re-established fraternity was to promote fraternity without hazing practices but adopt tradition initiation rites that involve dramatic plays and teaches ethical lessons. A fraternity that is non-elitist and focuses on community service projects. Soon, several other lodges were instituted in other parts of the country. Also, "Manila Lodge No.1" was re-instituted as "Manila Lodge No.8". On October 23, 2015, the Grand Lodge of the Philippines was officially chartered as its first step to attaining greater unity among lodges, growth, expansion and sustainability. It is also the aim of the Grand Lodge of the Philippines to unify all Lodges in the Philippines, attain international standards and improve its organizational structure. In the succeeding years, membership was static until the chartering of two Metro Manila Lodges namely: “Quezon City Lodge No. 10” and “Makati City Lodge No. 11” in the middle of 2018 that saw a notable growth in membership in the association. Also, in the same year, Luzon Encampment No. 2 was chartered and “Manila Encampment No. 1” was re-instituted as “Manila Encampment No. 3”. Requirements for Membership in an Odd Fellows Lodge Membership is open to both man or woman (for other lodges) of good character, of any race, nationality and social status, who is loyal to his or her country and believes in a Supreme Being, the creator and preserver of the Universe, is eligible for membership. Odd Fellowship strictly forbids any interference with one's religious beliefs or political opinions. Lodges charge an initiation fee and annual dues. The amount of dues is set by each lodge. To become a member of an Odd Fellows lodge, the path across the world is almost the same. Those interested are advised to either contact the nearest local lodge via telephone or email, meet a current member, or come to an Odd Fellows sponsored event and let the members know your intentions. 207 Years

There was a moment—clear, sincere—when you first chose this path.
Not for title. Not for display.
But because something in you answered the call to become more.
Years have passed.

Lessons were given. Hands were clasped.
The work began.
But tonight, on our 207th Anniversary, the question is not about our history—it is about us.
When did you last live what you once declared?
Not in words… but in action.
Not in symbols… but in substance.
Because this Order was never meant to be worn only on special days.
It is meant to be carried—quietly, consistently—into how we show up for one another.

In the meetings we choose not to miss.
In the burdens we help carry without being asked.
In the presence we give when it would be easier to stay away.
This is where the meaning remains alive.
207 years ago, a light was kindled.
It continues today—not by tradition alone, but by brothers who refuse to let it fade.

So reflect, not as a member—but as a keeper of that light:
Are you still building what you once believed in?
Or standing at the edge of something you used to feel?
Because the legacy we honor tonight
is not measured by time—but by those who choose, every day, to live it.

Happy 207th Anniversary.

Let us choose understanding over assumption.
Let us choose patience over reaction.
Let us choose respect over impulse.

I came across a Facebook Reel, and for some reason, it stayed with me longer than I expected. It wasn’t anything grand or complicated, just a simple thought, but it struck something personal in me. It reminded me of a principle that I’ve been trying, day by day, to live by in my everyday life.

It made me pause for a moment and reflect. Out of all the things we encounter online, it’s interesting how sometimes the simplest messages are the ones that resonate the most. And as I sat there thinking about it, I realized that this wasn’t something new to me, it was something I’ve been quietly trying to practice, something I keep coming back to whenever I find myself in situations that test my patience, my understanding, and even my character.

It’s a simple principle, really. But I’ve come to realize that simple does not always mean easy. In fact, it is often in the simplest principles where we are tested the most, in our daily interactions, in our reactions, and in the way we choose to see and understand the people around us.

I’ve always tried to look at things positively, even when the situation isn’t in my favor. To be honest, it’s not always easy. There are moments when I feel frustrated, offended, or even disappointed. There are times when my first reaction is no different from anyone else. But over time, I’ve learned that how we choose to look at things has a powerful effect, not just on the situation, but on our own character.

One thing I keep reminding myself, something I consciously try to practice, is to always give the benefit of the doubt.

In the simple moments of life, this principle is tested more often than we realize, even in the most ordinary situations.

For example, when I’m on the road and someone suddenly cuts me off, my first instinct might be irritation. But I try to pause and tell myself, maybe that person is rushing to an emergency, or dealing with something urgent I don’t see. That small shift in thinking changes my reaction.

When someone doesn’t reply to my message, it’s easy to feel ignored or overlooked. But instead of jumping to conclusions, I try to remind myself, maybe they’re busy, tired, or going through something heavy that they haven’t shared.

There are also moments when a Brother, or even someone close to us, seems distant or different. Sometimes, words are said in a way that doesn’t sit well with us. In those moments, I try to hold back from reacting right away and instead ask myself, what if there’s something more behind this that I don’t yet understand?

And I’ve noticed this, when I choose to think this way, something changes. My reactions become calmer. I become more patient. I listen more. I judge less. It softens my heart.

But more importantly, it reminds me that not everything we see is the full story.

And as I reflect on this more deeply, I realize that this mindset is not just for everyday life outside, it becomes even more important within our beloved Order.

Because if we are honest with ourselves, there will be times when we do not agree with what is being done. There will be moments when we question decisions, when we feel differently, when we think things could have been done another way.

That is part of being human. That is part of being involved.

But at the same time, we must also remind ourselves of something important, our leaders did not simply arrive where they are without reason. They carry responsibilities that are not always visible. They see things we may not yet see. They make decisions not only based on personal preference, but on what they believe is best for the Order as a whole.

And leadership, in itself, is not easy. It requires making decisions that will not always be popular. It requires standing firm even when misunderstood. It requires thinking not only of the present, but of the future of the Order.

This is where we, as members, play a very important role.

Our Order cannot move forward without cooperation. No plan, no direction, no vision can succeed if it is constantly met with resistance without understanding. In the same way, our Order weakens when we choose reaction over reflection, or criticism without first seeking to understand.

So before we react, before we criticize, before we allow ourselves to be carried by emotion, maybe we can take a step back.

Maybe we can pause.

Maybe we can give the same benefit of the doubt that we try to give strangers on the road.

Let us try to set aside our personal biases, whether toward the person, past experiences, or even preconceived notions. Let us try to respect not just the individual, but the office that he holds.

Let us try to ask ourselves, what is the intention behind this? what good is being pursued? what direction is being guided?

Because cooperation does not always mean agreement. It means choosing to understand first. It means supporting what is good. It means trusting that there is a purpose, even if we do not yet fully see it.

We may not always agree, and that’s okay. Agreement is not always the measure of unity. But how we handle our disagreements matters.

Do we react immediately? Do we allow emotion to take over? Or do we reflect first, understand first, and respond with thought and respect?

As Odd Fellows, we are guided by Friendship, Love, and Truth. These are not just words we say, they are principles we are meant to live.

Friendship teaches us to understand each other, even when it is difficult.
Love teaches us patience, especially when it is tested.
Truth teaches us to look beyond our own perspective and seek what is right, not just what feels right.

And sometimes, living these principles simply means choosing not to assume the worst.

Choosing to believe that there is a reason.
Choosing to believe that there is intention.
Choosing to believe that there is something more we may not yet fully understand.

My dear Brothers, I share this not as someone who has mastered this, but as someone who is still learning it every day.

There are times I fail. There are times I react too quickly. But I keep coming back to this principle, because I know that when I practice it, it makes me a better person, and I believe, a better Odd Fellow.

If we can all try, even in small ways, to practice this mindset, to pause, to reflect, to give the benefit of the doubt, then we will not only improve ourselves, we will strengthen the unity, harmony, and spirit of our Order.

And in that unity, leadership becomes easier, and the work of the Order becomes stronger.

Let us choose understanding over assumption.
Let us choose patience over reaction.
Let us choose respect over impulse.

And perhaps, if we truly live this, we will begin to see each other not just as members of the same Order, but as Brothers who choose to stand with one another, even in moments of disagreement, even in moments of uncertainty.

Because at the end of the day, what will sustain this Order is not just rules, not just decisions, not just leadership, but the way we choose to treat one another.

If we lose patience with each other, we weaken the bond.
If we allow assumptions to divide us, we slowly drift apart.
But if we choose understanding, if we choose kindness, if we choose to believe the best in one another, then no challenge, no disagreement, no difficulty can ever truly break us.

My dear Brothers, may we never forget that beyond all positions and opinions, we are bound by something deeper.

And that is BROTHERHOOD.
