As National Cancer Survivors Day draws to a close, we’re reminded that cancer survivorship begins at diagnosis and continues for a lifetime.

Today, we celebrate every survivor—those newly diagnosed, in treatment, recovering, and living beyond cancer. 💗

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women worldwide—accounting for 1 in every 4 cancer cases in women.
The encouraging news: many outcomes can be improved with the right systems in place.
Early detection, timely treatment, stronger health systems, and financial protection all make a real difference. This is why we continue to call on governments to make breast cancer a national health priority.
At ICanServe Foundation, we hold on to this belief: every woman deserves access to breast health information, screening, treatment, and support—no matter where she is or what she can afford.
Because behind every number is a life, a family, and a future that matters.

Free Breast Screening Event in Malolos City

The City Government of Malolos, in collaboration with ICanServe Foundation, conducted a Free Breast Screening Event on June 3, 2026 at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center. The activity aimed to promote breast health awareness and the importance of early detection in the fight against breast cancer. A total of 128 women from various offices of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Malolos availed themselves of the free breast screening services provided during the event.

Dr. Frederick Cesar Irineo Villano, City Health Officer of Malolos opened the program and highlighted the significance of early detection in reducing breast cancer mortality and improving treatment outcomes. He said he hoped to strengthen the partnership between the City Health Office and ICanServe through future training programs for barangay health workers, particularly in conducting Clinical Breast Examinations (CBE).

Hon. Miel Arthem B. Agustin, Malolos City Councilor, welcomed the participants and acknowledged the presence of officials and personnel of the City Health Office of Malolos, employees of the LGU, and representatives of ICanServe. She expressed her gratitude to ICanServe for its continued partnership with the City Government of Malolos and conveyed optimism for another successful breast screening event scheduled in October. She also acknowledged the medical doctors from the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) and the Philippine Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) who volunteered to perform CBEs for the breast screening activity. The doctors were assisted by trained Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) from Marikina City.

ICanServe president Nikoy de Guzman thanked the City Government of Malolos for its collaboration and commitment to women’s health. She emphasized the importance of presenting a united front against breast cancer through sustained awareness campaigns and early detection initiatives. She said increasing public awareness and encouraging regular breast screening are vital steps in saving lives and reducing the burden of breast cancer within communities.

Dr. Necy Juat of NKTI gave a lecture on Breast Cancer 101 where she discussed risk factors associated with breast cancer, as well as common myths and facts surrounding the disease. The open forum that followed gave participants the opportunity to ask questions and gain further insights regarding breast health and cancer prevention. Participants then underwent free breast screening services conducted by the volunteer doctors and BHWs.

The activity provided women employees of the LGU with access to early detection services and valuable information on breast health. The event served as an opportunity to encourage proactive healthcare practices and strengthen awareness regarding breast cancer prevention and early detection. Out of the 128 women screened, a total of 17 were found to need further evaluation and follow-up. The Office of Councilor Miel Agustin committed to provide assistance and support to these women to help ensure that they receive the necessary medical attention and care.

After the breast screening, the main proponent of the event, Councilor Miel Agustin, together with ICanServe representatives, and the medical team paid a courtesy call on Malolos City Mayor Christian Natividad of Malolos City. During the meeting, Mayor Natividad expressed his appreciation for the partnership between the City Government of Malolos and ICanServe. He thanked the organization for its continued efforts in promoting women’s health and breast cancer awareness. The Malolos Free Breast Screening Event was a successful undertaking that benefited 128 women from various LGU offices.

The collaboration between the City Government of Malolos and ICanServe demonstrated a shared commitment to promoting women’s health and advancing breast cancer awareness. The activity reinforced the importance of early detection as a key strategy in reducing the impact of breast cancer and laid the groundwork for future partnerships, training programs, and screening initiatives aimed at protecting and improving the health and well-being of women in the community.

Some breast cancer cases can be prevented—and small, everyday choices can make a difference.

Taking steps like maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol, and avoiding smoking can help reduce your risk.

Caring for yourself is one way of showing up for the people who love you, too 💗

ICANSERVE, volunteer specialists mark World Lymphedema Day 2026

CanServe Foundation, Inc. collaborated with the Philippine Society of Vascular Medicine (PSVM) to mark World Lymphedema Day on March 6, 2026 by holding free lectures and lymphedema screening in partnership with various hospitals.

Lymphedema is a condition where the lymph fluid does not drain as it should, builds up in the tissues, and causes swelling. Breast cancer patients may be at risk for lymphedema if lymph nodes were removed during surgery to determine how far the cancer has spread, or if they had radiotherapy for areas with large numbers of lymph nodes. Lymphedema usually affects the arm where the lymph nodes were removed, but it can also affect other parts of the body, such as the chest wall. Swelling usually develops slowly, over time. It may develop during treatment or it may start years after treatment.

Specialists led by members of the PSVM Council of Lymphology devoted time to answer queries and screen patients at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center, De La Salle University Medical Center, East Avenue Medical Center Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center, Makati Medical Center, ManilaMed, Perpetual Help Medical Center-Las Pinas, Philippine General Hospital, St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City, St. Luke’s Medical Center-BGC (Taguig), Singapore Cancer Center, and Southern Philippines Medical Center.

PSVM is a premier specialty society of competent physicians delivering excellent vascular care to patients. Vascular medicine is a specialized field of internal medicine focused on the comprehensive, non-surgical management of diseases affecting the arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels (excluding the heart and brain). Specialists diagnose and treat conditions like peripheral artery disease, blood clots, lymphedema and varicose veins through lifestyle counseling, medication, and minimally invasive procedures.

Download You Can Do This (A Breast Cancer Patient’s Manual) for tips to prevent breast cancer-related lymphedema or to keep it from getting worse. Some of the recommendations are:
• Do not carry heavy loads with your affected arm (where the lymph nodes were removed).
• Do not let your affected arm be used for taking blood pressure, for needle pricks for blood or glucose tests, or for vaccinations.
• Avoid extreme temperatures. Extreme cold or heat can trigger a flare-up of lymphedema due to changes in blood flow.
• Protect your skin. Avoid insect and other animal bites.
• Keep your nails clean and short to prevent ingrown nails and infection.
• Avoid tight clothing and tight jewelry.
• Wear a medically-prescribed and professionally-fitted compression sleeve on your arm when traveling by air. The pressure changes the body goes through while flying could trigger lymphedema in people who have had breast cancer surgery.
• Consult a trained specialist (a certified lymphedema therapist) to receive a type of therapeutic massage called manual lymph drainage. Therapeutic massage works best to prevent lymphedema when given early, before symptoms progress.
