Gratitude in Governance

Behind every classroom, therapy session, and milestone at Stepping Stone is something our families don't always see — the work of making sure we are worthy of your trust.

Last week, we welcomed three volunteer evaluators from the Philippine Council for NGO Certification (PCNC) for our re-evaluation.

From our organizational structure to our financial controls, our documents to our processes and governance — they checked it all. Thoroughly, carefully, and with such generosity of spirit.

These evaluators are not paid staff. They are volunteers who take time away from their own work and families to help NGOs like ours stay honest, transparent, and accountable. It's quiet, behind-the-scenes work, but it is how we ensure that every peso donated, every program created, truly serves our children and adults with special needs.

Autism is a spectrum of experiences, not a straight line. Every autistic person is unique, with their own strengths, challenges, communication styles, sensory needs, and ways of experiencing the world.

Understanding these differences helps us move beyond labels and toward acceptance, respect, meaningful support, and inclusion. Different strengths. Different needs. Same value.

Sometimes what looks like “challenging behavior” may be a child’s way of coping with sensory needs, stress, big emotions, or experiences we may not see.

Stimming can be a natural way for many children to regulate, cope, communicate, or feel comfortable. Rather than immediately trying to stop the behavior, we can ask: What is the child communicating? What might they need? Is anyone unsafe?

A trauma-informed approach also reminds us to look beyond the behavior, consider the possible impact of stress or trauma, and work with families and caregivers to understand each child’s needs.

Understanding the child behind the behavior helps us respond with greater patience, compassion, and support.

Stepping Stone proudly commemorates the legacy of Dr. Janusz Korczak, Polish-Jewish pediatrician, educator, author, and advocate for children’s rights.

The unveiling of the Janusz Korczak plaque at Stepping Stone, Parañaque, brought together representatives of Poland and Stepping Stone in remembrance of his lifelong commitment to the dignity, welfare, and rights of children.

His legacy reminds us that every child deserves to be heard, respected, protected, and valued.

A lasting tribute to a life defined by love, dedication, and moral courage.
