ARATILES IN CANCER RESEARCH🔬

Aratiles is widely known in the Philippines for its small, sweet fruits. But a scientific study conducted in Taiwan examined a different part of the tree and found compounds in its leaves that were toxic to certain cancer cells under laboratory conditions.

A team of researchers led by Jih-Jung Chen published a study in the scientific journal Planta Medica examining the chemical compounds found in Muntingia calabura, the scientific name of aratiles.

The researchers, who were affiliated with academic institutions in Taiwan, investigated the plant as part of their work on naturally occurring substances with potential biological activity.

For the study, they collected aratiles leaves from Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. The leaves were dried and subjected to a series of chemical extraction and purification procedures to separate and identify their individual compounds.

Through this process, the researchers isolated 20 compounds, including substances belonging to chemical groups known as chalcones and flavanones.

They then examined the effects of these compounds on two cancer cell lines grown in a laboratory.

One was HT-29, a cell line derived from human colorectal cancer. The other was P-388, a mouse leukemia cell line commonly used in experimental cancer research.

The results showed that four of the isolated compounds exhibited particularly strong cytotoxic activity against at least one of the two cell lines.

Cytotoxicity refers to a substance's ability to damage cells or interfere with their survival under experimental conditions. In cancer research, scientists use these tests to identify compounds that may be worth investigating further.

Among the 20 substances examined, two chalcones showed the strongest cytotoxic activity.

Against the human colorectal cancer cell line, these two compounds recorded IC50 values of 1.20 and 1.31 micrograms per milliliter, respectively.

An IC50 value represents the concentration of a substance needed to produce 50% inhibition in a particular laboratory test. Lower values generally indicate stronger activity under the conditions being measured.

These findings are significant because they identify specific chemicals in aratiles leaves that can affect cancer cells under controlled laboratory conditions.

However, the results must be understood within the limits of the experiment.

The researchers tested compounds that had been chemically extracted and purified from the leaves. They did not test ordinary aratiles leaves, boiled leaf preparations, or the fruit commonly eaten in the Philippines.

The experiments were also conducted on cancer cells grown in a laboratory, not on cancer patients. The study did not establish whether the compounds would be safe or effective in humans, or whether they could act against cancer without harming healthy cells.

Finding cytotoxic activity is an early step in investigating possible medicinal compounds. Further research is necessary to determine how these substances work, their potential toxicity, and whether they have any practical medical application.

The findings provide scientific evidence that aratiles leaves contain compounds with measurable cytotoxic effects against certain cancer cell lines.

They do not establish that consuming aratiles leaves, drinking aratiles tea, or eating the fruit can prevent or treat cancer.

The journey of Team Buenlag in the Calasiao Developmental League 2026 – 17 & Under Category comes to an end with a 5th Place finish.

Hindi man natin nakuha ang puwestong ating pinapangarap, hindi kailanman matutumbasan ng ranggo ang tapang, puso, at pagsisikap na ipinakita ninyo sa bawat laro.

Sa bawat puntos, bawat depensa, bawat pagkakamali, bawat pagbawi, at bawat laban na hindi ninyo sinukuan—pinatunayan ninyo na ang tunay na panalo ay hindi lamang nasusukat sa standings, kundi sa karakter na nabubuo sa bawat hamon.

To our players, thank you for giving your all and representing Buenlag with pride, discipline, and heart. To our coaches, parents, supporters, and everyone who stood behind the team—maraming, maraming salamat sa walang sawang suporta.

This may be the end of our journey in this league, but it is only another chapter in your journey as athletes and as young men.
