| He can sleep through the storm. Maybe you can too. 😇
In Mark 4, the disciples were in a boat with Jesus when a violent storm hit. Waves crashed over the sides. Water filled the hull. Panic spread and yet, Jesus was asleep.
They woke Him in desperation: "Teacher, don't you care that we are perishing?"*
He rose, spoke three words to the raging sea, "Peace, be still" and everything went calm.
But here's what we often miss: Jesus wasn't sleeping because He was unaware. He was sleeping because He was unafraid.
Ellen White captures it beautifully in The Desire of Ages (p. 336):
"When Jesus was awakened to meet the storm, He was in perfect peace. There was no trace of fear in word or look, for no fear was in His heart… It was in faith — faith in God's love and care — that Jesus rested. ...As Jesus rested by faith in the Father's care, so we are to rest in the care of our Saviour. If the disciples had trusted in Him, they would have been kept in peace."
This is what the Sabbath is.
As Sabbath-keepers, we understand the Sabbath not merely as a day off, but as a weekly declaration of trust. Sabbath-keeping is the sign that the Christian's hope and confidence are entirely in Jesus Christ — Creator and Redeemer. It is God's built-in rhythm of release, saying every seventh day: stop fearing. I am still in the boat.
The disciples were terrified not just because the storm was too big, but because they forgot who was with them. Every week, the Sabbath calls us back to remembrance: He is here. He is not panicking. And in His presence, neither do we have to.
Whether on land or on sea, if we have the Saviour in our hearts, there is no need of fear. Living faith in the Redeemer will smooth the sea of life, and will deliver us from danger in the way that He knows to be best. —The Desire of Ages
Whatever storm you're sailing through this week—a storm of worry, grief, uncertainty, or exhaustion—the Sabbath is your invitation to lie down in the boat beside Jesus.
He is at peace. And He is with you.
Happy Sabbath. 🌊✨
