#𝐂𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖𝐒 : In celebration of Museums and Galleries Month, we will be posting a series of infographics highlighting selected artifacts safely kept here at your provincial museum.
Third in the series are the remains (replicas) of the oldest human-like species excavated in the Philippines to date-- Homo luzonensis.
Unearthed by a team led by archaeologist Armand Mijares in Callao Cave, Peñablanca, Cagayan in 2019, the fossil are estimated to be around 134,000 years old. Their features suggest that these hominins were small-bodied and were well adapted to tree-climbing. The discovery of this relatively new species is a recent addition to humankind's evolutionary family tree.
To see the fossil replicas, visit our Prehistoric Gallery at the ground floor of the Cagayan Museum and Historical Research Center.
We are normally open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekdays, and from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on weekends. Entrance is FREE of charge!
Happy Museums and Galleries Month!
