Bagbag SNHS Teachers and Students Participate in ‘Tree Growing for a Cause’ for the 124th Civil Service Anniversary

In celebration of the 124th Philippine Civil Service Commission Anniversary, teachers and students from Bagbag National High School participated in the “Tree Growing for a Cause: Malasakit sa Bayan, Malasakit sa Lingkod Bayani” event. The activity took place on September 17, 2024, at Barangay 22, San Cristobal, Sitio Sagpatan Planting Site in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte.

The teacher participants included Mrs. Lourdes B. Mariano, Mrs. Lorna G. Ballaco, Mrs. Ernalyn L. Antonio, Miss Arvin May Fahigal Ramos, and Mr. Louie Ralph Oasay. They were joined by Grade 12 STEM students Ghian Andrey Diaz and Richdale Nicolas, who demonstrated their commitment to environmental advocacy.

The activity was not only a tribute to the spirit of public service but also an active step towards promoting a culture of environmental consciousness within the community. By planting trees, the participants reinforced the message that small, collective actions can lead to significant, lasting impacts on the environment. This activity underscored the importance of involving educators and the youth in building a greener and more sustainable future.

In the face of environmental crises, SCIREN emerges as a beacon of hope, melding the precision of science with the urgency of emergency response. Like a siren's call, SCIREN rallies communities and schools to action, deploying environmental initiatives and innovative solutions to safeguard our planet's delicate balance. Let us heed the call of SCIREN, uniting in purpose to protect and preserve our natural environment for generations to come.

As an action, Bagbag Solsona National High School champions environmental stewardship through 'It's Sci O'Clock Scigaw Kalikasan Time,' a Division of Ilocos Norte initiative promoting eco-friendly practices.

"Some of the Scigaw Kalikasan activities include:
1. "Vermicomposting" - turning organic waste into compost. It promotes environmental sustainability and waste reduction through the conversion of organic waste into nutrient-rich compost with the use of earthworms.
2. "Trash Duty, It's My Responsibility" – Proper waste separation and disposal. Every room has trash bins with labels to facilitate easy waste separation. Plastic bottles and other materials are collected to be sold, serving as one of the department's financial supports.
3. "Puno Mula sa Puso" - School, community, and home-based tree planting.
4. "Palatandaan! Basahin Mo Ako" - Energy and water conservation practices are implemented with the use of signage inside the rooms. Turning off lights, faucets, and other appliances when not in use is observed.
5. "Green Ride Challenge" encourages students and employees to use bicycles for sustainable transportation. Instead of motorcycles, some students are also encouraged to use their bicycles to go to school, reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
6. "Sci-Gaw Exhibit" - An exhibit highlighting the improvised learning materials and outputs of students about environmental conservation and protection. It includes posters, photography about the environment, artworks, and other school/home materials using indigenous and recyclable materials.
7. "lEARN the Knowledge!" - Distribution of eco-pamphlets and utilization of social media for environmental education and information.
8. "Clean-Up Drive" engages students and employees in litter removal, fostering community responsibility for a greener future.
Through these initiatives, Bagbag Solsona National High School fosters a culture of environmental awareness and action, contributing to a more sustainable future."

STEM students from Bagbag Solsona National High School soared to success at the Division Festival of Talents, particularly in the highly competitive STEMazing Contest. Held at Solsona National High School, this event brought together students to showcase their prowess in crafting on-the-spot research proposals, setting the stage for a riveting display of talent.

Earning accolades as the 4th runner-up out of 13 participating groups, the team consisting of Chinie Mayel Sison, Xyrel Salvador, and Yaffha Valencia distinguished themselves with their research proposal titled "Algae: Alternative Livelihood Generating Algae (Spirogyra spp.) for Environmental Alleviation." Their innovative approach to environmental sustainability captured the attention of both the audience and the discerning panel of judges.
Guiding the students with expertise and enthusiasm was their coach, Mrs. Maria Leizel Asuncion, whose mentorship proved instrumental in shaping their ideas into a compelling research proposal.

At the helm of Bagbag Solsona National High School is Mr. Gregorio A. Dumlao, Head Teacher III, whose steadfast leadership provided the students with a supportive environment to explore their passions and excel in their endeavors.

In a thrilling academic showdown, students from Bagbag Solsona National High School made their mark by securing 6th place in the Biota Quiz held at Mariano Marcos State University in Batac, Ilocos Norte. Competing against 91 teams on April 30, 2024, these students displayed their biology smarts and clinched a commendable position among participants from across Ilocos Norte.

Jay Anne Lei Pascua, John Lloyd Tomas, and Kyla Eunice Ubando led the charge, showing off their knowledge and quick thinking as they tackled environmental and biological questions. With the guidance of their coaches, Mr. Romel Mark Sarmiento and Mr. Alvin M. Peralta, they were well-prepared to take on the challenge.

Heading Bagbag Solsona National High School is Mr. Gregorio A. Dumlao, whose support and encouragement helped foster an environment where students could thrive academically. This achievement not only brings pride to the school but also inspires other students to aim high and pursue their academic passions.
