School-Based Student-Led School Watching and Hazard Mapping
Santa Catalina, Negros Oriental – Kakha High School successfully conducted a comprehensive Student-Led School Watching and Hazard Mapping activity on August 27, 2024. The initiative, in compliance with Division Memorandum No. 0663, s. 2024 and DepEd Order No. 23, s. 2013, aimed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to identify and address potential hazards within their school environment.
The day began with an orientation for the School Watching Team, where participants were briefed on the objectives and procedures of the activity. Following the orientation, the team conducted a thorough walkthrough of the school premises to familiarize themselves with the layout and identify potential hazards.
In the afternoon, students engaged in a school mapping exercise. Equipped with necessary tools and materials, they systematically identified and marked various hazards, including structural weaknesses, fire hazards, and natural disaster vulnerabilities. The mapping activity allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of their school's risk profile and contribute to developing effective disaster preparedness plans.
The School DRRM Coordinator, in collaboration with the Supreme Secondary Learners’ Government, YES-O, and BKD Officials, played a crucial role in organizing and facilitating the event. Their guidance and support ensured the successful implementation of the activity and fostered a sense of ownership among the students.
By empowering students to actively participate in school safety initiatives, Kakha High School is taking a proactive approach to disaster risk reduction. The Student-Led School Watching and Hazard Mapping activity serves as a foundation for building a more resilient and safer learning environment for all.
