𝘿𝙄𝘿 𝙔𝙊𝙐 𝙆𝙉𝙊𝙒 𝙏𝙃𝘼𝙏. . .

𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗼𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗮 or 𝘈𝘭𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘢 is a small, unisexual mangrove tree that exceeds 20 meters in height. It thrives in muddy or stony soils and exudes toxic white latex that can cause blindness and skin irritation.

Known for its pink young leaves and scarlet withering foliage and latex which is historically used as a fish poison. Rare and striking, it highlights the balance of utility and danger in coastal ecosystems.

In muddy brackish water a catfish unfurled.
Quite hunters sly, along the waters, sway.
With long whiskers— sweep.
It roams, steady and slow.
An ace of tolerance, it lingers its turn.
In covert zones, it settles on to bide and hide.

‎
‎𝗣𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀 also known as 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀, are specialized root structures found in mangroves and other plants growing in waterlogged or swampy environments. These roots grow upwards, emerging above the water or soil, and have tiny pores called lenticels that allow the plant to take in oxygen from the air.

‎This unique adaptation enables plants like mangroves to survive in low-oxygen environments, playing a crucial role in maintaining the ecosystem balance in wetlands and coastal areas.

the sunlight perforates.

The coral garden is calm and close.

Kaleidoscopic fish dance in flourish,
as shadows drift— fleeting dreams.

Corals fend the reef,
echoing a hidden depths.

𝘿𝙄𝘿 𝙔𝙊𝙐 𝙆𝙉𝙊𝙒 𝙏𝙃𝘼𝙏. . .

𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗛. 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮 is considered as the Philippines "𝙌𝙪𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙨". She is a respected biologist and environmentalist who devoted herself to preserving and reviving mangrove habitats.

In 2008 she was recognized by Time Magazine as one of the "𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙀𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩" lauding her pioneering efforts, in mangrove conservation that have contributed to protecting wildlife diversity while addressing climate change.

Dr. Primavera started with shrimp farming and later switched to focus on mangroves due, to the impacts of unregulated shrimp aquafarming on the environment. She introduced the idea of eco-friendly aquafarming in mangrove areas to encourage methods that support nature and local communities.

‎In her speech, Dr. Gelantaga-an emphasized the vital role of agriculture and fisheries fields in attaining food sustainability. Thus, the venturing to BS Fisheries and BS Agriculture are good choice courses.

‎The second-year fisheries students converged at Lapus-Lapus floating cottage in Prk. Epil-Epil, Brgy. Bulanon, Sagay City, Negros Occidental for the 2nd and the last day of their learning tour.

The fisheries students are actively in action as they distinguished the species of mangroves and seagrass covered in the area.

The learning tour became meaningful as they experienced snorkeling and kayaking which they enjoyed.

Wait— there’s more to experience in the Lapus-lapus floating cottage as the locals served their savory and gastronomic seafood like Shrimp and Fish Sinigang, Steamed Crabs, Buttered Scallops, Grilled Fish, Gusto, Lato, Lucot, Calamares with refreshing Watermelon and Mango fruits that complement to the sumptuous lunch of the guests (students and faculty).
