BREAST MILK COLLECTION & STORAGE
Donating one's breast milk to milk banks and informal sharing of milk is not so uncommon nowadays. Working in the milk bank made us realize the importance of clean pumping technique. In the milk bank, we culture the milk first before pasteurization. If clean expressing technique is not observed, donor milk could grow a significant bacterial growth making it unqualified for pasteurization. So, we are sharing this to moms to ensure that you are storing a safe and clean milk whether it be for your baby or for any recipient of your milk.
CLEAN TECHNIQUE FOR EXPRESSING MILK
1. Before each session, wash hands thoroughly with soap and water and dry with clean towel.
2. Using a clean damp washcloth, ( or wipes followed by a clean dry towel) gently wipe ni**lees and breast working from the ni**le outwards.
3. Express breastmilk to a sterile container:
any food grade plastic container that can be boiled for 5 minutes and used for milk collection or pre-sterilized breast milk bag.
4. WASH, RINSE and STERILIZE containers/ pump parts that touch your breast or your milk once a day, every day that you use it.
☝️If you express two or more times a day, simply rinse with hot water in between sessions.
☝️Always follow manufacturer's instructions.
LABELLING MILK
1. Write the date you expressed milk on each container with permanent marker.
STORING EXPRESSED MILK
1.Store your milk within 30 minutes of expressing.
2. Freeze milk as soon as you know, you won't feed it to your child on the day expressed.
3. You may refrigerate your milk within 72 hours before freezing.
4. If you still have room for more milk in the container after one session, you may add to it before freezing using the ff method: chill the fresh milk first in the refrigerator for 30 minutes then pour the newly chilled milk.
