MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT OF MSU CBAA Launches 11th JLVP with Tree Planting Drive in Saguiaran
Saguiaran, Lanao del Sur โ The Management Department of the College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA) officially launched the 11th Junior Leadership Volunteerism Program (JLVP) through a tree planting activity titled โSowing Hope: Trees for a Sustainable Communityโ on April 12, 2026, in the Municipality of Saguiaran, Lanao del Sur.Anchored on this yearโs theme, โSkills, Service, Sustainability: Youth for a Responsible Future,โ the activity gathered more than 200 student volunteers from CBAA, including those enrolled in MGT 109, FPE, and CWTS.
The initiative was carried out in collaboration with various local government units and partner agencies in Saguiaran, including the Municipal Tourism Office, Human Resource Office, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), Saguiaran Municipal Police Station, and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO).
More than 300 fruit-bearing seedlings composed of durian, lansones, and pomelo were planted in the designated area. These seedlings were generously provided by the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of the 2nd District through Mr. Ashawie Pangandaman.
The activity aimed to promote environmental sustainability while contributing to long-term community benefits such as food security and ecological preservation. The MENRO of Saguiaran, headed by Usman P. Ibra, facilitated the safety guidelines and tree planting orientation to ensure proper planting practices.
The program was also attended by PLTCOL Salahuddin Basher, Chief of the Police Community Affairs and Development Unit (PCADU), who delivered a message of support and encouraged the youth to remain actively engaged in community development initiatives. Mr. Omar Biston, representing the MSU Community Relations Office, also joined the activity, reflecting the universityโs continued commitment to community engagement.
The Alpha Phi Omega Saguiaran Chapter likewise participated in the activity, further strengthening multi-sectoral collaboration.
In her message, JLVP Adviser Dr. Sonayah D. Guimba presented the background of the Junior Leadership Volunteerism Program as a flagship initiative of the Management Department that integrates leadership development, volunteerism, and corporate social responsibility into student formation. She emphasized that JLVP serves as a platform for nurturing socially responsible and service-oriented future professionals through meaningful community engagement.
Dr. Guimba also highlighted the spiritual significance of tree planting, explaining that for Muslims, it is considered a form of sadaqa jariya or continuing charity. She noted that in Islamic teaching, when a person passes away, their deeds cease except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, and a righteous child who prays for them. By planting trees that will benefit future generations, the volunteers contribute to a lasting source of ุงูุฎูุฑ or good deeds.
She further explained the relevance of the activity to CBAA students as future business leaders. She pointed out that the business sector is among the largest users of natural resources, particularly trees that are transformed into various products. Engaging in initiatives such as tree planting helps students internalize the importance of sustainability and responsible resource management, which are essential values in ethical and responsible business practice.
Dr. Guimba also expressed her gratitude to the Local Government Unit of Saguiaran, led by Hon. Mayor Jalal Angin, for its proactive support and strong partnership in the successful conduct of the activity.
A pledge of commitment was led by Management Department Chairperson Dr. Hanafe Abdulmalik, where volunteers affirmed their dedication to environmental protection, responsible citizenship, and active community involvement.
Faculty members who were present and actively participated in the activity included Prof. Annalee C. Mala, Prof. Mirnife Macopa-Guro, Dr. Alifahmie Magolama, and Prof. Lizamae Macabuat-Ampuan.
The tree planting activity marks the beginning of a series of youth-centered initiatives under the 11th JLVP. Upcoming activities include โResponsible Choices: Shaping Better Consumer Habits Among Youth,โ an awareness campaign on responsible consumerism and va**ng prevention scheduled on April 24, 2026, and โClean Shores, Healthy Communities: Lakeshore Clean-Upโ on May 1, 2026, in Marantao, Lanao del Sur.
In addition, a series of youth developmental programs will be conducted, including โSeminar-Workshop for Scholar Development: Building Future-Focused Skills,โ โStrengthening Core Employability Skills for Future Professionals,โ and โDiscover, Prepare, Succeed: A Career Readiness Seminar for Senior High Students.โ
The 11th JLVP reflects strong alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), as it integrates education, environmental stewardship, responsible citizenship, and multi-sectoral collaboration in building a more sustainable and empowered future for the youth and the community.
