๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒ Happy International Day for Biological Diversity! ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿพ

Did you know? The Philippines is one of the world's 18 megadiverse countries, hosting about 2/3 of Earth's biodiversity. Thatโ€™s 70-80% of all known plant and animal species ๐ŸŒบ Scientists estimate over 52,177 species call the Philippines home, with a high level of endemism thanks to our unique island geography.

But at least 700 species are threatened with extinction, and many more are at risk due to habitat loss, pollution, illegal wildlife trade, and destructive farming. ๐Ÿ˜ข๐ŸŒ Only 37.47% of our key biodiversity areas are protected. We must do more! ๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸŒณ

As young Filipinos, we are the next guardians of our forests, farms, and seas! ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒŠ โœจ Learn about local species โœจ Plant native trees โœจ Speak out for habitats that canโ€™t speak for themselves ๐ŸŒด๐ŸŒŠ

๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ Did you know? The Philippines is a global biodiversity hotspot for bees, home to 5 of the world's 9 native honeybee species and around 12 stingless bee varieties! ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญโœจ

We have the tiny, antimicrobial honey-producing kiwot (lukot) to the giant pukyutan hanging from tall trees, our native bees are true agricultural superheroes, boosting crop yields by up to 80%! ๐ŸŒบ๐Ÿฅญ๐ŸŒด

However, habitat loss and harmful farming practices threaten these vital pollinators. It's time to protect and conserve our native bees to ensure a sustainable future for our agriculture and ecosystems. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ

Save the bees. Save our future. ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒโœจ Happy Earth Day! โœจ๐ŸŒ
๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Our food depends on a healthy planet ๐Ÿฅ˜
Today, we celebrate the beauty and wonder of our planet, from lush food forests and vibrant oceans to vast deserts and breathtaking mountains. It's a reminder of how precious and fragile our Earth is, and the importance of protecting it for future generations.

Every small action counts: reduce waste, recycle, plant a tree, conserve energy, and spread awareness. Together, we can make a difference and help preserve the incredible beauty of our home.

Letโ€™s commit to being stewards of the Earth today and every day! ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒŽ

๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Youth Pledge for Just Food Systems! ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ๐ŸŒฑ
Young leaders from Southeast Asia gathered during the Asia and the Pacific Food Systems Transformation Forum to discuss how youth can play a pivotal role in building sustainable, climate-resilient, and nutrition-sensitive food systems across our region. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒ

A major highlight was the unveiling of the ASEAN Youth Pledge for Sustainable and Resilient Food Systems, a collective commitment by youth representatives to prioritize food security, ecosystem protection, and equitable access to nutritious food. This pledge emphasizes that youth shouldnโ€™t just be consulted but empowered as active partners in shaping our food future.

Youth are already making a difference at the community level through participatory research, nutrition dialogues, and local food initiatives that reflect local realities.

From community gardening, urban agriculture, to sustainable enterprises using indigenous vegetables and traditional rice varieties, youth-led initiatives are strengthening local food systems across the region. ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒพ

However, challenges like limited land access, financing, and decision-making power remain. What we need is institutionalized youth leadership, where young people are not only heard but are co-creating and implementing solutions. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ“

Letโ€™s continue to advocate for stronger governance that integrates youth voices in policy and investment decisions. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿฅ—

๐ŸŒธ Celebrating Womenโ€™s Month with Budbud Artisanal Salt in Miagao, Iloilo ๐ŸŒธ
Meet Lorlie Noblezada, proud asindera, Ilongga, owner of De Paul Artisanal Salt Manufacturing, cultural advocate, and passionate social worker from Miagao who is breaking barriers and leading the revival of their townโ€™s historic Budbud sea salt industry. ๐Ÿง‚

Since 1823, this industry has been part of Miagaoโ€™s coastal heritage, but climate change and seawall constructions have nearly stopped it. After 195 years, Lorlie, the woman at the helm, is bringing new life to this centuries-old craft and is recognized as the woman who revived the dying industry, once dominated by men.

In March 2018, she and her husband, Rizalde, and their children, brought back the familyโ€™s old salt-making tradition by establishing budbud production.

Thanks to the University of the Philippines Miagao for food innovations such as lemograss-infused salt, Coastline 5023 for food safety mentorship, DTI for business scaling, and DOST for packaging, among many others, including the Miagao Government and BFAR, the Budbud salt-making industry grew.

Lorlie's is proud of her cultural roots, and this fueled her commitment to modern business practices. She aims to empower women entrepreneurs by training them in traditional budbud-making, helping to preserve Miagaoโ€™s salt-making heritage, and uplifting the community.
