Philippine Pediatric Dental Society Inc. The PPDSI is nationally identified as the leader in the oral health care of children and adolescents The Philippine Pediatric Dental Society, Inc.

(PPDSI) had its beginnings as a collaborative undertaking of a team of general dentists and Pediatric Dentistry specialists whose goal is in the advancement of quality pediatric dentistry as it serves the Filipino people. It is a non-stock non-profit organization registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission and is recognized as the pediatric dentistry group affiliate of the Philippine De

ntal Association. Through the years, the PPDSI was able to establish affiliations with different national and international professional organizations – it is a founding member society of the Pediatric Dentistry Association of Asia (PDAA) and a member society of the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry (IAPD). In January 2011, it has been granted accreditation by the Board of Dentistry of the Philippine Regulation Commission as the specialty group in the field of pediatric dentistry in the country. The PPDSI is nationally identified as the leader in the oral health care of children and adolescents and the mentally, physically and emotionally-challenged patients. The Society has three major thrusts: SERVICE, TRAINING and RESEARCH. At its first home at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC), its founding team of dentists established the Pediatric Dentistry Division – the first hospital-based pediatric dental facility in the country. During its five years at PCMC, it offered a comprehensive oral care program for children and special needs patients. In the area of training, its highly qualified team of dentists offered a six-month training program, a continuing dental education program on Pediatric Dentistry for general practitioners. PPDSI found a new home and established the first Pediatric Dentistry Center in the country at the Children’s medical Center, Philippines (now known as the Dr. Fe del Mundo Medical Center), the oldest hospital institution specializing in children’s care. This venture is jointly operated by the Philippine Dentist Development Cooperative whose original unity of purpose and professional teamwork continues its commitment to service, training and research in the field of Pediatric Dentistry. The strong bond among its members and dedication to its ideals has brought PPDSI through these years of joy and turmoil and continues to carry the society to the forefront of Philippine dentistry in the present times.

Speaker: Dr. Jose Antonio Paulino
Topic: Preseptal Cellulitis and the Oral Cavity

Pediatric preseptal cellulitis is a challenging disease entity that stems from a multitude of causes from insect bites to trauma, to airway infections and local bacterial spread. However, since treatment is often the same, by way of broad spectrum or narrow spectrum antibiotics, source of infection is often forgotten. In my current practice, I am seeing a handful of patients with recurrent preseptal cellulitis which is due to local spread from oral cavity sources, from cavities, poor dental hygiene and oral infections. It is the aim of this lecture to solidify the knowledge of preseptal cellulitis and forming partnerships on the treatment of such.

Topic: The Pediatrician's Approach to the Management of the Pre- And Postoperative Dental Patient

The most common reason why parents bring their child to pediatricians for a dental issue is "toothache" or dental pain.
Pediatricians treat the condition with an analgesic approved for pediatric use, either paracetamol or ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is the preferred drug compared to paracetamol because of its triple properties - analgesic, anti-inflammatory and fast action.

If there is a bacterial infection, initial antibiotics of choice would either be co-amoxiclav or amoxicillin.

If a dental procedure needs to be done by a pediatric dentist, a proper and comprehensive cardiopulmonary clearance should be performed by the pediatrician before the contemplated course of action is done.

The scope of the cardiopulmonary clearance will depend on the condition of the child. Relatively well children need less tests but those with illnesses such as cardiac or renal problems need referrals to their respective subspecialties.

Speaker: Dr. Mia Go
Topic: Digital Dentistry in Pediatric Orthodontic Study

Often, the term Digital Dentistry brings to mind the specialties of surgery, esthetics, and prosthodontics. It is rare for one to realize that digital dentistry can in fact be utilized in the case study and treatment planning in the fields of pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, and the crossover of both specialties, preventive and interceptive orthodontics in children. Intra oral scanners and arch analyses can be accurately done within the software, and these digital records can be integrated together with other routine digital radiographs for a better understanding of the the patient case. This lecture will cover the basics of getting started with Digital Dentistry and how this can simplify workflow for the clinician and the allied dental professionals, that will ultimately lead to improved informed decision by the patient.

Topic: Enhancing Pediatric Dentistry Towards Universal Health Care: Issues, Challenges, and Solutions

The Philippines remains to have one of the highest caries prevalence globally. Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is a public health concern. By age 70, only 7 teeth are left, compromising one’s quality of life and nutrition. The oral health system in the Philippines is fragmented, colonial, elitist and feudalistic. This lecture will present the state of oral health in the country, the challenges, and the culture sensitive strategies initiated by the government to attain the vision of DOH on oral health, ‘Ngiting 7020’ (By age 70, Filipinos must have 20 permanent teeth). Pediatric Dentistry plays a crucial role in addressing two of the most important lifestages, childhood and adolescent years which form the foundation of ‘beautiful and healthy smiles’ that will last a lifetime.

Speaker: Prof. Hien Ngo
Topic: Glass-ionomer Cements: An update on how to maximize its clinical performance

In July 2024, the European Commission proposed phasing out dental amalgam by 1 January 2025, five years ahead of schedule, including a ban on its manufacture and export from the EU. Amalgam has long been a cost-effective solution for direct restorations, especially for underserved populations. However, this phase-out may lead to increased costs, clinical uncertainties, and barriers to patient access.

While dental manufacturers have been working on alternatives to amalgam, progress has been limited. Currently, composite resin and glass ionomer cements remain the primary options for direct restorations. This lecture focuses on adapting to a world without amalgam, emphasizing a significant advancement in glass ionomer cement known as glass hybrid technology. This innovation makes glass ionomer suitable for certain Class Il restorations.

The presentation provides clinicians with practical steps to ensure the optimal performance of these materials, as alternatives to amalgam and explores tooth-preserving restorative techniques. By leveraging the latest advancements, clinicians can continue to deliver effective dental care in the face of changing regulations.

Speaker: Dr. Meenakshi Kher
Topic: Successfully Treating the Pulpally Involved Primary and Young Permanent Tooth

Decision making, treatment planning and ex*****on can often be challenging in pediatric dentistry. The inability of parents and young children to give an accurate pain history, the presence of multiple adjacent carious teeth, varying abilities of cooperation, all make pediatric endodontics demanding, for even the most astute clinician.

The speaker will delve on all these aspects with the aim of simplifying pediatric endodontics and increasing success rates. Treatment techniques will be discussed step-by-step with clinical pictures.

• When to choose selective removal of carious teeth (IPT) and when is it wiser to perform a pulpotomy procedure? A detailed discussion of both.
• Primary tooth pulpectomies, best practice.
• When is it better to extract the primary tooth and place a space maintainer?
• Vital pulp therapy in the immature permanent tooth.

Dentists play a crucial role in shaping the future of our children by focusing on INCLUSION, INNOVATION, and COLLABORATION.

By creating an INCLUSIVE environment they ensure that all children regardless of their background or abilities receive the dental care they need. INNOVATIVE practices such as the use of new technologies and techniques help make dental visits more comfortable and effective for young patients. COLLABORATION among dental professionals, educators, and families promotes a comprehensive approach to children's health and well-being.

Together these efforts pave the way for a healthier future for our children where everyone has access to quality dental care.
