St. Catherine of Siena was a 14th-century mystic and Dominican tertiary who rose from a large, humble family in Italy to become one of the most powerful voices in the medieval Church.
She was born as one of her family's 25 children in Siena, Republic of Siena in Tuscany on March 25, 1347 during the years of the Black Plague. Despite having no formal education, she experienced profound spiritual visions from a young age and dedicated her life to extreme prayer, service to the poor, and public ministry, joining the Mantellates, (Third Order of Saint Dominic) when she was just 16. She is most famous for her bold political intervention in 1376, when she traveled to Avignon and successfully persuaded Pope Gregory XI to return the papacy to Rome, ending decades of "Babylonian Captivity.", her painstaking and best effort to heal the Great Western Schism. Her devotion manifested a stigmata only visible to her, strengthening her faith and service to the Lord. This extreme habit of fasting took a toll on her, as she fell ill, health rapidly declining, passing away on April 29, 1380 at the age of 33.
Her intellectual and spiritual legacy is centered on her masterpiece, The Dialogue of Divine Providence, and hundreds of letters that blended deep theological insights with practical, often blunt, advice to world leaders. Because of the lasting impact of her writings and her role in shaping Church history, she was named a Doctor of the Church in 1970—one of the first women to ever receive the title. Today, she is remembered as a patron saint of Italy and Europe, celebrated for her courage, her "mystical marriage" to Christ at 21 years old, and her tireless efforts to unify a divided Church.
Catherine, healer of bodies and souls, and challenger of the powerful, grant us the courage to reach out to the most vulnerable, the strength to speak truth to the political structures that lay waste to truth and justice. Assist us with your prayers for the people who suffer under oppressive structures and actions. Help us to listen to the cry of the poor, the marginalized, and our earth and to act wholeheartedly in joining others to be a healing presence in a world hurting and desperate for the relationships that bring solace.
