Streak unlocked: We have successfully welcomed social work freshies for the 3rd year in a row. 🔥

Last July 22, 2026, your friendly neighborhood 2nd and 3rd year social work students reported for duty to welcome the '26 – '27 batch on their first day at the Pamantasan. 🫡

This all started with the now grad-waiting batch of legendary social work students. 😝 They said "visit ng freshies sa day 1, ano? tara?" 👀 and we were like "1... 2... 3... go, tradition na 'to." 🤭❗️

The seniors warmly welcomed the new students with kamustahan, introduction, election of officers, and the ultimate question: "why social work?," 🫣 along with tips on how to survive and what to expect for the SW courses, profs, and paper works. ✍🏻

Maraming salamat to our (Brazilian) Sophomores who showed up to help and to the Department of Social Work for allowing us to conduct our yearly kulitan with the freshies! 🥳

We hope that this tradition continues and be passed on to the next batches. Padayon, freshies! 💜

𝗕𝘆𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗴 𝟯𝗿𝗱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿? 𝗔𝗻𝗼, 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗮?

But before we start our junior year, let’s dedicate our remaining time as sophomores to appreciating ourselves—the countless times we thought of giving up but persisted, how we showed up amidst uncertainty, and the way we strived to do our best irrespective of the state we are in. 👏 All wins, progress, and even setbacks that you conquered in the past academic years are something to be proud of, no matter how small you think they are. So, please don’t forget to tap and thank yourself too, but do it always with humility. 🤍

In times of doubt, may we always be reminded that as oppressive and inhumane practices here in our country intensify, the more we are being called to become social workers who will always be committed to dismantling systemic inequalities and advocating for social justice and human rights; may we find the strength to continue through that reminder. ❤️

As part of the course Social Welfare Policies, Programs, and Services, the BS SWeethearts successfully conducted a seminar on May 6, 2026, at GCA 304 titled “Advocacy in Action: The Role of PLCPD in Shaping Legislative Agendas.”

“Katarungan, inklusyon, at malasakit sa konkretong mga polisiya na magtataguyod ng pagakapantay-pantay at katatagan.” said Prof. Concepcion.

With the insightful discussion of Mr. Ronald Magbuhos Papag from the Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population and Development (PLCPD), the students were able to deepen their understanding of the policy formulation process and the importance of collaboration between legislators and stakeholders. Policymaking and strong advocacy were better understood through the participative and fruitful discussion with the students—the session helped them learn how to translate real community needs into meaningful legislative action.

This seminar empowered future social workers to become active advocates for social justice and human rights, equipping them with the knowledge to analyze policies, identify gaps, and understand their impact on service delivery—extending their roles from individual practice to the national level.

As Mr. Papag quotes The Internationale: “Wala tayong maaasahang bathala o manunubos. Kaya’t ang ating kaligtasan ay nasa ating pagkilos.”

The freshman year of SWeethearts officially comes to an end.

The road was bumpy, the lines were blurry, and the workloads were heavier than ever. Nevertheless, our block made it, and that was through the teamwork, leadership, and support everyone showed throughout the school year. There may be ups and downs, but never a moment where we let each other down, because throughout the journey, we were taught of the importance of human relationships in our desired profession.

Our freshman year tested us, not only as students but as social workers for our blockmates and even for ourselves. It was not an easy path – there was the confusion, the struggle with the system, and the conflicts that came our way. But through everything, we gained something greater: the real, raw, and transformative experiences that brought us to where we are today.

To those with the thoughts of shifting, transferring, or staying, the SWeethearts will remain to be the first family you have in your college life. All of us, we wish you all nothing but the success you’ve always been aiming for.
