Pride is not a performance. It is a reminder that love, identity, and fundamental human rights are non-negotiable. What began as a historic refusal to be silenced remains an ongoing struggle for acceptance, safety, and institutional respect.

As we mark the beginning of Pride Month this June 1, the Communication Society stands in unyielding solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community. We recognize that true progress is not measured by temporary visibility, but by the systemic barriers we break and the spaces we secure for every individual to live authentically.

As communicators, our responsibility extends beyond mere expression. Words carry weight, and narratives shape reality. We commit to using our platform to amplify the stories that demand to be heard, challenge the prejudices that seek to diminish, and firmly reject any form of discrimination.

True equality cannot be achieved in isolation. It requires collective courage, shared conviction, and an unwavering refusal to back down. We do not simply celebrate diversity; we defend it.

In the Philippines, the Maguindanao Massacre remains one of the deadliest attacks on the press, where 32 media workers were killed in a single incident. Years have passed, but it still stands as a reminder of how dangerous the profession can be.

The situation is no different abroad. In parts of the Middle East, journalists covering armed conflict continue to be killed while reporting on the ground, some caught in crossfire, others deliberately targeted. Many of these cases receive global attention, but the risks remain unchanged.

Accountability remains a challenge, and justice often moves slowly, if it comes at all. For many journalists, stepping into the field still means weighing the risk of not coming back. Behind every report is a person choosing to document the truth despite the danger, knowing the consequences can be fatal.

Press freedom cannot exist in an environment where fear dictates who gets to speak. Protecting journalists is not optional; it is necessary.
