Alay Lakad Foundation, Inc. (ALFI) is a non-stock, non-profit organization established in 1972 as a partnership between the government and the private sector to alleviate the plight of the needy and disadvantaged Filipino Youth, in particular, the out-of-school youth. From its tiny pioneering group of government and civic leaders, educators and businessmen, and spearheaded by the M
inistry of Social Services, now the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Alay Lakad has grown into a nationwide organization conducting walks-for-a-cause, not only in Metro Manila, but also in different provinces, cities and municipalities all over the country. From these walks and other fund-raising activities, it generates the income it uses to grant no-interest loans to finance out-of-school youth projects. ALFI”s main activity is a yearly walk conducted nationwide, wherein sponsors are enjoined to donate a certain amount to provide financial support to fund socio-economic projects for the needy Out-of-School Youth (OSY). These socio-economic projects include skills training on various occupational trades, income-generating projects, community scouting, leadership training and cultural activities. ALFI formed the Projects Committee in 1993 to carry out more effectively the main objective of financing socio-economic projects of the OSYs and its function is to review the viability of projects submitted by OSY for funding and recommend their approval and disapproval to the Board. ALAY LAKAD HISTORY
Alay Lakad began in 1972 when the Department of Social Welfare, now (DSWD) conceived and initiated the Walk-for-Cause project in Metro Manila. The project in cooperation with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scout of the Philippines. In 1973, it was launched nationwide by then First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos, who was elected Honorary Chairman. By that time, the membership of the Alay Lakad had expanded to include the Ministry of Education and Culture and Sports (now DepEd), Ministry of Local Government and Community Development now (DILG) Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the National Media Center (now PIA) from the government sector. , Rotary International, Lions and the Kiwanis Club, the Young Women’s Christian Association (YMCA), the Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP) and the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC). On May 27, 1974, the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos signed Presidential proclamation No. 1267 which declared every third Sunday of June each year as “Alay Lakad Para sa Kabataan Day”. It enjoined all public and private agencies engaged in youth development to maximize their efforts to help create a society that aims to attain the full economic and social well-being of the country’s underprivileged youth. Alay Lakad was registered at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on December 9, 1975 as Alay Lakad Incorporated.
