Children need protection from diseases that threaten their health, and one of these is poliomyelitis, commonly known as polio.
Polio is a highly infectious disease caused by the poliovirus. It mainly affects ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐๐ง ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐๐ซ ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ and can attack the nervous system, sometimes causing irreversible paralysis. Although many infections do not show symptoms, the disease can become severe when the virus reaches the nervous system.
Statistics show that ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ 1 ๐ข๐ง 200 ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐จ ๐ข๐ง๐๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐ฅ๐๐๐๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ข๐ซ๐ซ๐๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข๐๐ฅ๐ ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ, usually in the legs. Among those who become paralyzed, ๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฑ๐ข๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐๐ฅ๐ฒ 5โ10% ๐๐ข๐ when their breathing muscles become immobilized.
Although there is no cure for polio, it can be prevented through ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐ข๐ง๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง. Receiving the polio vaccine multiple times can help protect children against the disease.
Rotary's fight against polio has been ongoing for decades. In 1979, Rotary partnered with the Philippine government in a major immunization project that aimed to protect approximately six million Filipino children.
This initiative showed the impact of joint efforts in the fight against polio. Through continued awareness and vaccination efforts, we can help bring the world closer to eradication.
