In light of the recent incident involving harassment of a Filipina traveler by a group of elderly Filipino tourists in Switzerland, it shows the negative side of Toxic Filipino Values of Filial Piety and Utang na Loob.

Filial Piety, by definition, is a social norm on which we give reverence and deep respect towards our elders. This is one of the aspects of Confucian Ethics in Traditional Chinese Culture, but it is also deeply ingrained in the Filipino Psyche. [1] [2] It is also construed to be associated with other Toxic Filipino Values like Pakikisama and Utang na Loob (Debt of Gratitude) [3] [4]
We Filipinos are, by nature, respectful to our Elders, that is sometimes blurring the lines between blind worship and violating self-respect. That, we just have to endure the mockery out of respect to the elders and just to get along in the name of peace of mind.

In this instance, the elderly tourists heckled and harangued the Filipina traveler while she is taking pictures with the iconic tourist spot because the elders find it “entertaining” to pass the time waiting for their turn in the tourist spot. Some of the elders complained that the Filipina traveler took too long and is “inconsiderate” when in fact, harassing the Female traveler makes them the inconsiderate ones, what a plot twist right?
The behaviors and actions of the elderly Filipino travelers are inexcusable, cannot be tolerated, and is not representative of the Filipino as a nation. We respect our elders, yes, but their age does not give them a license, a pass, or an excuse to do harm or to abuse a person. Respect begets respect, we must be empathetic of the people around us, we might not know what they came from or what they have been through to reach that point in their lives.
We must eradicate these toxic Filipino traits into our psyche, not just through words, but through conviction and action if we are so deserving of a prosperous and strong nation and society. These leeches may benefit to the system that they created (and exploited), BUT TOMORROW BELONGS TO US! WE ARE THE FUTURE OF THE NATION!

Are we really an "Upper-Middle Income" country? Or does it just look good on paper?

The World Bank recently upgraded the Philippines to Upper Middle-Income status [1] [2], citing our Gross National Income (GNI) per capita at $4,850. On paper, this reflects our economy's resilience against both internal and external shocks, including the recent US-Iran War. This new classification is supposed to open doors for more development assistance, credit,
& financing and boost investor confidence (though we can definitely debate whether our current institutions and legislature truly inspire that confidence) [3] [4].

But let's look at the reality on the ground. Yes, our inflation rate finally slowed down to 6.4% as of June 2026 [5] [6]. However, unemployment is creeping up again, jumping to 4.8% in May 2026 from 4.7% just a month prior in April [7].

All these macro-statistics aside, a critical question remains: Who is actually benefiting from these economic milestones? Are we seeing the "inclusive growth" they keep promising, or is this just another win for the few at the top? [8]

The government has rolled out a few measures, such as the Php 85 minimum wage increase within the National Capital Region (split into two tranches) [9] and the BSP's directive to reduce or outright waive InstaPay and PESONet transfer fees to make our financial system more accessible [10]. While helpful, let's be honest, these are paltry concessions. We have yet to truly reap the fruits of our honest, hard-earned labor.

That is for us to decide, and it is our patriotic duty to hold our leaders accountable. The backward economic, social, and bureaucratic policies currently in place are counterproductive and remain a massive hindrance to our overall growth as a nation.

People's Republic of China.

05/07/2026

Over the past week, supporters of Senator Rodante Dizon Marcoleta took to the streets to protest his recent plunder case, branding it as "selective justice." [1] However, the formal charges filed by the Ombudsman on July 3 highlight a glaring issue of financial transparency. The controversy centers on P75 million in undeclared campaign contributions from his 2025 senatorial bid. The senator admitted on live television that it was undeclared from his required Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN) and Statement of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCE). [2]

While the Commission on Elections (Comelec) previously cleared Marcoleta of election offenses due to a legal technicality regarding when the official campaign period started, the Ombudsman is pushing forward with criminal charges. Marcoleta’s defense? He argues that the P75 million did not come from public funds, that the money was already spent by the time he filed his paperwork, and that the millions were simply an "utang na loob" (debt of gratitude) from political and business allies. [3] [4]

The Ombudsman’s office, however, is not buying it. They clarified that the crime of plunder can still be committed even if public funds are not directly involved. In a sharp rebuke to the senator's defense, the Ombudsman stated that while utang na loob is a beautiful Filipino value, it has no place in public office: "The moment gratitude is used to explain away P75 million in undisclosed money, it stops being ‘utang na loob’ and becomes exactly what our plunder and bribery laws were written to prevent." [5]

Consequently, the senator is facing charges for violating both Republic Act No. 7080 (the Anti-Plunder Act) [6] and Presidential Decree No. 46, commonly known as the "No Gift Policy." [7] The senator's camp claims these charges are politically motivated, designed to exclude him from the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, though this argument has been widely dismissed as baseless. [8]

Ultimately, cases like this serve as a glaring reminder: we cannot afford to look away. We must fiercely scrutinize how our public servants amass their wealth, how they wield it, and how that wealth dictates their policymaking.

Protecting our nation’s resources from being squandered by self-serving officials and their political patrons is not just a choice, it is our patriotic duty. We must demand that those in power remain radically transparent and absolutely accountable to us, the Filipino people.

Do not be deceived by those desperate to spin the truth and rewrite the narrative. It is time to shatter the toxic cycle of patronage politics that hides behind a distorted sense of Utang na Loob. We owe them no debt of gratitude; they owe us honest governance.

Stay vigilant. Demand better. Follow the money.
