In the closing plenary “ONE PNA: Strengthening our Strategic Initiatives in Empowering the Filipino Nurse,” Gov. Gian Carlo Torres, PNA National President, reaffirmed the collective direction of the organization. PNA continues to unify efforts in strengthening nursing leadership, advancing professional development, and elevating the voice of Filipino nurses in health systems and policy spaces.

From bedside realities to national decision-making, the session “The Policy Seat: Heeding to the Nurses’ Voice from the Ward to the Boardroom” underscored the importance of ensuring that nurses are meaningfully represented in leadership, governance, and health policy spaces.

Moderated by Gov. Marc Ryan Portuguez, the panel brought together key leaders including Hon. Mila Delia Llanes, Mr. Vincent Sumergido, and Gov. Megeve Sumampong to discuss how nurses’ lived experiences and expertise must inform policy, workforce development, and health systems reform.

Because policies become stronger, more responsive, and more equitable when the voices from the ward and community are heard in the boardroom.

LOOK: Nurses from different regions of the Philippines convened at the 10th Summer Conference of the Philippine Nurses Association at the SMX Clark, Pampanga 👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️

The conference began with an opening prayer, which was followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem and the PNA Hymn. A Candle Lighting and Renewal of Pledge of Fidelity to the Nursing Profession was led by Gov. Megeve A. Sumampong, the Chairperson of the Board of Governors 🎙️

An overview of the activities for the conference was provided by Beryl P. Battad, the Chairperson of Scientific Sessions. This was followed by the Opening Remarks delivered by Gov. Gian Carlo S. Torres, the National President of the PNA, and the Welcome Message delivered by Atty. Gerald Guttrie Aquino. The keynote address was given by Hon. Josefina A. Tuazon, a Member of the Professional Regulatory Board of Nursing 💌

Two plenary sessions were accomplished on the first half of the conference. The first plenary session was entitled “Autonomy in Nursing: Providing Decisive Care in High-Stakes Practice Environments.” Discussion on this topic was led by Moira G. Uy, Dean of the Institute of Health Sciences and Nursing - Far Eastern University ⚖️

The second plenary session was entitled “Digital Empowerment: Harnessing the Potential of Artificial Intelligence and Health Technology in Enhancing Bedside Care.” Discussion on this topic was led by Luisito V. Cruz, the President of MedEqual Systems and Supplies, Inc 💻🛜

In her session, “Nurses’ Grit and Adaptability: Promoting Mental Health and Workforce Resilience,” Marian Torres-Villanueva emphasized that while grit and adaptability are valuable strengths in nursing, they should never be used to normalize overwork, emotional exhaustion, or unsupported practice environments.

“Nurses should not continuously adjust to unstable systems alone.”

The discussion highlighted the need to move beyond individual resilience and toward organizational responsibility, ensuring that nurses are supported through responsive systems, adequate resources, psychological safety, and sustainable work environments.

True workforce resilience is built not only on perseverance, but also on support, stability, and collective care.
