The MVP members’ visit to the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial yesterday was a truly memorable and resounding success. We were exceptionally fortunate to have the Director of the Visitor Center, Vicente Lim IV personally guide us through this profound and moving tribute to a generation whose courage and sacrifice must never be forgotten. Through poignant stories and historical insights, we gained a deeper understanding of the lives honored within these grounds; a fitting and reverent conclusion to the American Period of the 3rd Module.

We were graced with sunshine throughout the tour, which added warmth to an already meaningful experience. Equally special was the presence of members of the Philippine Marine Corps, who graciously assisted in the flag-lowering ceremony. Their participation provided a dignified and heartfelt finale to an already extraordinary visit.

The tour left us enriched, humbled, and grateful—an experience that will remain with all who attended. Thank you! Wishing all History Course enrollees, Members and Committee Members Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! Looking forward to seeing all again in January! - John Papula (History Course Coordinator & Module 3 Leader)

The Philippine History Course’s 3rd module, the American Colonial Period, was led by John Papula, one of its coordinators. The first class on Nov 24th was a talk on Benevolent Assimilation: Effects & Consequences of American Rule in the Philippines given by lecturer John Ray Ramos, a lecturer at Ateneo de Manila University.

On Dec 1 John Silva, executive director of the Ortigas Foundation Library, gave a presentation on the Philippine Commonwealth.

Both presentations gave powerful insight on the American Colonial era. They each provided terrific information which gave our enrollees an outstanding understanding of the influences that shaped the Philippines of the past & present. Also, our enrolled members were able to learn about the relationship between the Americans & Filipinos.

Last Wednesday, December 3, the Guided Museum Tours Committee organized a cultural escape to the Pinto Art Museum in Antipolo, Rizal.

Many of our member participants experienced the breathtaking beauty of the gardens, architecture, and art collections for the first time. The museum, which showcases the works of contemporary Filipino artists, acted as a 'door' to Philippine art and culture. Founded by Dr. Joven Cuanang, the museum features extensive collections of paintings, sculptures, and installations across six buildings and sprawling grounds, offering a serene and thought-provoking experience.

We concluded our day with a communal lunch at Cafe Rizal, one of the onsite restaurants.

MVP looks forward to providing more Guided Museum Tours in 2026 and wishes everyone a joyous holiday season and safe travels!

Sharing snaps of the MVP Film Club event last Nov 29.

We watched Chris Nolan’s “The Prestige”.

Murielle provided the group with a comprehensive summary that set the ground for the subsequent
active and lively discussion which was a mix of confusion, philosophical, conflicting interpretations, and “wait, what actually happened?” energy that this movie always brings out.

We all agreed that the movie needs a 2nd watch to appreciate the deeper themes of obsession, narcissism, science and magic and just to appreciate
Chris Nolan’s masterful film making.

*What a wonderful way to close the year!*

Dear MVP Members,

Our *After 8 Festive Piano Soirée* was a truly fitting finale to the year, an evening enriched with music, warmth, and the joyful spirit each one of you brought. The singing, dancing, camaraderie, and shared enthusiasm created an atmosphere of genuine merriment.

Our heartfelt appreciation goes to our talented pianists, *Lolo B**g and Marivic*, for their exceptional performances, and to our gracious host and the youngest participant, for the delightful impromptu pieces that added a special touch to the celebration.

As the After 8 team looks ahead to the coming year, we warmly welcome volunteers who wish to offer their space, big or small, or share their talents to help us continue creating memorable gatherings. Your involvement will play an important role in shaping our After 8 socials for 2026.

The Local Tours Coordinator, Tonette Marcella, organized a daytrip to Angono, Rizal.

Here are some snapshots from our Higantes Festival Tour in Angono last November 16. We had 23 participants who joined the tour, watched the parade, and explored the town's attractions.

The Original Higantes of Angono welcomed the MVP Troopers with a bow. We also enjoyed the marching band, which is a legacy of National Artist of Music Lucio San Pedro, a son of Angono. The band's commitment to Filipino regional band and community music is truly impressive.

We visited the Blanco Museum, which features the artwork of the talented Blanco family, showcasing the idyllic life of Angono's townspeople. We were fortunate to meet the youngest son, who started painting at just 11 months old.

We experienced the vibrant street art of Dona Aurora Street and visited the stunning Diocesan Shrine and Parish of Saint Clement.

Then, we witnessed the Pagandahan Competition, where our MVP Ladies and Gents showcased their talents - it seems the Gents stole the show! 😜

Afterwards, we explored the ancient Angono-Binangonan Petroglyphs and discovered the contemporary art at KUTA, home to emerging Angono Artists.

We capped our visit with a taster of Angono’s traditional and exotic dishes which included the following :

Exotic Dishes
Balaw-balaw Rice - Fried rice mixed with seafood, chorizo de bilbao, onion and garlic
Ginataang Kuhol - Freshwater snails cooked in coconut milk

Adobong Kamaro - Rice field Crickets stewed in garlic, soy sauce and vinegar
Adobong Palaka - Frog meat stewed in garlic, soy sauce and vinegar
Nilasing na Palaka - Deep fried frog legs marinated in gin
Crispy Walkman - fried marinated chicken feet
Sinigang sa Misong Kanduli - Silver cat fish
Kalderetang Itik - Duck stewed in tomato sauce spice and bell peppers

Members of MVP’s Philippine History Course participated in a tour given by the Manila Maharlikha in Intramuros that concluded Module 2 (Spanish Era). Fort Santiago, rolling tranvia tour around Intramuros, Museo de Intramuros, Museo San Agustin & Casa Manila were all part of the day’s agenda. Our members dined at Ilustrado, also located in Intramuros, where they ate Filipino Spanish inspired dishes.

As the last Spanish stronghold during the Philippine Revolution in 1898, Intramuros has undergone restoration to preserve its Spanish colonial heritage.

Today, the district serves as a reminder of the Spanish colonial period, with its structures and layout reflecting the significant Spanish influence on Philippine culture, architecture, religion, food, and language.

The Philippine History Course successfully completed Module 2, which focused on the Spanish Era under the leadership of David King, one of the history course coordinators and module leader.

Professor Valerie May M. Cruz-Claudio from Ateneo de Manila University delivered an engaging presentation on Magellan and the Galleon Trade on October 20th, followed by a discussion on Missions & Religious Orders; Rebellions & Revolts on November 3.

Unfortunately, the final class on Nov 10th had to be cancelled due to typhoon conditions, which also prevented guest speaker Dr. Rita Alfaro from delivering her lecture on the Spanish Legacy via Zoom.

I'm delighted to share that our Foodie Club’s activity today was a resounding success, despite Typhoon Uwan's attempts to dampen our spirits!

When our initial plan for a Farmers Market tour led by Chef Cocoy got blown away, my coordinator and I quickly came up with a backup plan. And what a fantastic alternative it was! Our Lunch Crawl through Poblacion's charming streets was a huge hit.

We started at Crying Tiger, a fantastic Thai restaurant, where we savored delicious chicken satay and spring rolls. Next, we headed to El Chupacabra, a vibrant Mexican eatery, for our main course, and indulged in mouth-watering street tacos, burritos, and quesadillas. Finally, we wrapped up our meal with coffee, tea, and dessert at the Filling Station, a cozy American-themed diner.

The weather even cooperated, and everyone raved about the amazing food, venues, great company, and perfect weather.

Kudos to my trusty coordinator, Angelica, for helping me pull off this fantastic backup plan! Thanks also to the participants who were still enthusiastic about continuing despite the change in plans. Til the next Foodie Club adventure!
