Hugs of Hope Brings Christmas Cheer to Typhoon-Affected Children in Catmon, St. Bernard
In a spirit of compassion and solidarity, the Social Work Department of Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) – Maasin City Campus successfully conducted the “Hugs of Hope: A Christmas Outreach Activity for the Children in Catmon” on December 17, 2025. The event was held in Catmon, Southern Leyte, one of the areas most severely affected by Typhoon Tino.
Catmon sustained extensive damage from the typhoon, with many establishments, particularly schools, either partially or completely destroyed. Recognizing the urgent need for psychosocial support and educational assistance, this outreach activity aimed to bring hope, joy, and a sense of normalcy to children and educators during the holiday season.
This initiative was made possible through the combined efforts of the Social Work Department and the generosity of SLSU students, faculty and staff, and external donors, who provided support through various donations. The event was attended by teachers from Catmon Integrated School, children from Kindergarten to Grade 6, and their parents, fostering a strong sense of community participation and shared healing.
Throughout the event, children engaged in fun and interactive games designed to promote laughter and emotional well-being. A communal meal was shared, creating a warm and inclusive environment for families and volunteers to connect. The children also received school supplies, while teachers were provided with essential stationery materials to support the continuity of learning despite the challenges following the disaster.
More than just a gift-giving event, Hugs of Hope served as a meaningful reminder that even in the aftermath of calamity, collective action and compassion can restore hope and resilience. This initiative underscored SLSU’s commitment to community engagement, social responsibility, and the promotion of child welfare, especially during times of crisis.
As Catmon continues its journey toward recovery, this outreach activity stands as a testament to the power of partnership, empathy, and service in rebuilding not only structures but also spirits.
