Kiwanis clubs bring seeds of hope to Upper Acub
Far from the busy streets of the city, in the quiet uplands of Sitio Upper Acub in Barangay San Isidro, Koronadal City, an ordinary weekend became a meaningful day filled with hope, compassion, and inspiration.
More than 150 learners of Engkong Elementary School became beneficiaries of an outreach program led by the Kiwanis International Southern Philippine District Division 6B, reminding the community that even simple acts of kindness can leave a lasting impact.
The outreach mission was made possible through the collective efforts of four Kiwanis clubs — the Kiwanis Club of Marbel, Kiwanis Club of Koronadal City, Kiwanis Club of Dreamweavers, and Kiwanis Club of Tnalak S.C..
United by a common goal of serving children and communities, the volunteers traveled to the remote sitio bringing food, encouragement, and genuine care.
Upper Acub is home to many members of the Blaan indigenous cultural community. Most families in the area rely on farming, livestock raising, and other agriculture-based livelihoods for survival.
Despite the richness of their culture and the resilience of the people, the community continues to face challenges caused by poverty, geographical isolation, and natural calamities.
The area was heavily affected by the devastating landslide and flash flood in 2010 that claimed lives and displaced several families.
Since then, portions of the sitio have been identified as vulnerable to landslides and flooding because of its mountainous terrain and fragile soil condition. Yet through the years, the people of Upper Acub have continued to rise above adversity with courage and determination.
Recognizing the needs of the community, the Kiwanians conducted a feeding program using MannaPack Rice meal porridge, a nutrient-rich meal fortified with vitamins and minerals aimed at combating hunger and malnutrition among children.
For the learners, the warm meal represented more than nourishment. It became a symbol of hope and a reminder that people beyond their community care for their welfare.
The school grounds quickly transformed into a place filled with laughter and excitement as volunteers interacted with the children.
Conversations, smiles, and shared moments created an atmosphere of warmth that reflected the true spirit of volunteerism.
Lt. Governor Gerry Templonuevo expressed his appreciation to the participating clubs for their cooperation and commitment in making the activity successful.
“Thank you so much for your participation and cooperation in our activity,” he said, highlighting the importance of unity and collaboration in community service.
The activity also gained support from Past District Governor Jimmy Go, who personally visited the outreach mission.
“This is a good activity as we uphold our commitment in serving underserved communities,” he shared.
He further emphasized that Kiwanians should continue their mission of service regardless of changes in leadership, stressing that compassion and commitment should always remain at the heart of the organization.
For Engkong Elementary School Head Rina L. Silva, the outreach activity provided more than immediate assistance to the children.
“Exposing the children to this kind of activity not only benefits their health but also their total well-being,” Silva said.
She explained that many learners in remote communities often have limited opportunities and low aspirations because of their environment and experiences.
Seeing professionals and volunteers from different fields gave the children a glimpse of a wider world beyond their community.
“They need to understand that the world is vast. They need to broaden their perspective and aspire big. Thank you for your presence,” she added.
The volunteers themselves came from different walks of life — medical practitioners, law enforcers, lawyers, businessmen, retirees, and professionals — all sharing their time, talent, and treasures for the benefit of the community.
“They need to see more successful people and become inspired to be one of them someday,” Silva further shared.
Beyond the feeding program, the Kiwanians also conducted a tree-planting activity as part of their commitment to environmental stewardship.
The initiative reflected the organization’s belief that caring for communities also means protecting the environment.
By planting trees, the group hoped to contribute to environmental preservation while helping lessen the risks of soil erosion and flooding in upland areas.
More than a simple outreach mission, the activity became a testament to the power of compassion and unity.
In a community long challenged by hardship and disaster, the presence of volunteers brought encouragement, inspiration, and renewed hope to children and families alike.
As the volunteers prepared to leave Sitio Upper Acub, the smiles on the faces of the children became the most meaningful reward of all.
For the Kiwanians, the journey was never simply about giving aid. It was about touching lives, inspiring dreams, and showing that even the smallest acts of kindness can create meaningful change.
Through unity, compassion, and sincere public service, Kiwanis International continues to fulfill its mission — making a difference one child, one community, and one act of kindness at a time.
