Kalasag wants to ignite the spirit of volunteerism, encourage others to practice bayanihan, and to always be in the service of the wider Filipino masses and the marginalized sector. Kalasag is a youth-led organization that aims to be of service to the youth, the marginalized sector, and the wider Filipino masses. We are a non-profit and non-stock volunteer organization.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐠? Kala

sag means "shield" in Filipino, which is a symbol for protection or security. The organization's name was chosen because it emphasizes the mandate and responsibility for young people to be at the forefront of fighting against contemporary systemic inequalities, inequities, and socio-economic injustices and to be vigilant against the spread of misinformation and disinformation in their communities. We are committed to creating an environment where young Filipinos can be informed and equipped in order to combat these issues head-on.

The BUHAT Initiative's Mindanao Tri-City Tour concluded in Cotabato City, bringing together youth leaders from the Active Youth Organization for the Society (AYOS) and the Environmental Youth Alliance (EYA) for a Communications Training focused on strengthening youth leadership through responsible and strategic communication.

Implemented by Kalasag Cotabato through the BUHAT Initiative, funded by the SIGLA Research Center, the training was conducted in partnership with the Children for Climate Action Project (CCAP) of Community and Family Services International (CFSI), with funding support from the European Union.

Throughout the training, participants strengthened their communication skills while deepening their understanding of media and information literacy, misinformation and disinformation, and the responsible use of social media for advocacy. Through interactive workshops, message development exercises, role-playing activities, and social media simulations, participants learned how to communicate clearly, verify information before sharing it, and develop messages that promote climate action, community awareness, and meaningful youth engagement.

More importantly, the training encouraged participants to recognize communication as a form of leadership. As youth leaders within their respective organizations, they reflected on the responsibility of using their voices to inform, inspire, and mobilize their communities. By the end of the sessions, participants demonstrated greater confidence in expressing their ideas, engaging in dialogue, and utilizing digital platforms to advance positive social and environmental change.

As the final stop of the Mindanao Tri-City Tour, the Cotabato leg represents the culmination of the BUHAT Initiative's commitment to strengthening grassroots youth leadership across Mindanao through localized communications training, media and information literacy, and advocacy storytelling. The tour brought together young leaders from diverse communities, equipping them with practical tools to become responsible digital citizens, effective communicators, and advocates for truth and climate resilience.

While the training has concluded, the partnership continues. Through the BUHAT Initiative, Kalasag Cotabato remains committed to mentoring participating youth leaders beyond the training by providing strategic communications support, technical guidance, and storytelling mentorship for their organizations and advocacy campaigns. By sustaining these relationships, the initiative seeks to help youth-led organizations strengthen their public engagement, amplify community voices, and build long-term, community-driven impact across Mindanao.

The BUHAT Initiative's Mindanao Tri-City Tour continued in Zamboanga City, bringing together youth leaders from Barangay Arena Blanco and Barangay Kasanyangan to strengthen their communication, advocacy, and climate storytelling skills.

Implemented by Kalasag Cotabato through the BUHAT Initiative, funded by the SIGLA Research Center, the training was conducted in partnership with the Children for Climate Action Project (CCAP) of Community and Family Services International (CFSI), with funding support from the European Union.

The Communications Training equipped participants with practical skills in media and information literacy, countering misinformation and disinformation, advocacy communications, copywriting, visual design, and creative storytelling. Throughout the sessions, participants transformed community concerns into compelling advocacy campaigns by developing travel vlog role plays, mock social media content, and youth-led campaign concepts rooted in their lived experiences.

Working in groups, participants identified pressing issues affecting their communities—including improper waste management, water scarcity, pollution, and the degradation of coastal ecosystems through illegal mangrove cutting. They translated these local realities into actionable communication strategies, recognizing that effective advocacy begins with truthful information, community participation, and messages that inspire collective action.

Beyond strengthening technical communication skills, the training encouraged participants to view themselves as advocates capable of influencing positive change within their barangays. Through collaborative discussions and campaign planning, they explored how strategic communications can strengthen climate resilience, amplify youth voices, and encourage communities to take ownership of local environmental challenges.

As the second stop of the Mindanao Tri-City Tour, the Zamboanga leg reflects the BUHAT Initiative's commitment to localizing media and information literacy while supporting grassroots youth leaders in developing practical communication skills that respond to the realities of their communities.

The conclusion of the training also marks the beginning of a continuing partnership. Through the BUHAT Initiative, Kalasag Cotabato remains committed to mentoring participating youth leaders beyond the training by providing technical assistance, strategic communications guidance, and storytelling support for their organizations and advocacy initiatives. Iligan City marked the first stop of the BUHAT Initiative's Mindanao Tri-City Tour, bringing together children and youth leaders for a Communications Training that strengthened their capacity to communicate responsibly, think critically, and advocate for their communities.

Implemented by Kalasag Cotabato through the BUHAT Initiative, funded by the SIGLA Research Center, the training was conducted in partnership with the Children for Climate Action Project (CCAP) of Community and Family Services International (CFSI), with funding support from the European Union.

Throughout the training, participants from Tribu Inisyatibu and Kabataang Bugsay Ahongon explored the realities of misinformation and disinformation, responsible social media use, and creative storytelling as tools for advocacy. Through interactive discussions, role-playing, travel vlog presentations, and the development of mock social media campaigns, participants examined local issues such as deforestation, flooding, improper waste disposal, and HIV awareness while crafting advocacy messages grounded in accurate information and their communities' lived experiences.

Beyond strengthening communication and media literacy, the activity fostered collaboration among youth from diverse communities, creating an inclusive learning environment where participants exchanged perspectives, reflected on shared challenges, and recognized the power of truthful, community-centered storytelling in advancing positive social and environmental change.

As the first leg of the Mindanao Tri-City Tour, the Iligan training reflects the BUHAT Initiative's commitment to localizing media and information literacy while equipping grassroots youth leaders with practical communication tools to counter disinformation and amplify community voices.

The conclusion of the training also marks the beginning of a longer journey. Through the BUHAT Initiative, Kalasag Cotabato remains committed to mentoring and supporting participating youth leaders beyond the classroom by providing technical guidance and communications support for their organizations, campaigns, and advocacy initiatives. By continuing to strengthen their storytelling, strategic communications, and community engagement capacities, the initiative aims to help these young leaders build sustainable, impactful movements within their respective communities.

The momentum continues.

Kalasag Cotabato successfully conducted the second TAGPI Boutique under TAGPI: Textile and Garments Purposing Initiative, a personal passion project spearheaded by our Founder and Chairperson, Arbijei Gatchalian, in partnership with the Almond Branch Church Women's Ministry.

This activity reaffirmed the power of community-driven solutions. Through the collective efforts of volunteers, donors, and partners, rescued garments reached more individuals and families, extending both practical support and the message that sustainability should be inclusive and accessible to all.
Every item redistributed represents more than a reduction in textile waste—it symbolizes generosity, dignity, and the belief that communities can be active participants in creating a more sustainable future.

We thank everyone who continues to support this initiative through donations, volunteerism, and advocacy. Together, we are weaving a story where people and the planet thrive side by side.

Kalasag Cotabato proudly celebrates the successful launch of TAGPI: Textile and Garments Purposing Initiative, a personal passion project spearheaded by our Founder and Chairperson, Arbijei Gatchalian, in partnership with the Almond Branch Church Women's Ministry.

The initiative officially began with an awareness campaign personally facilitated and presented by Arbijei before members of the Almond Branch Church community. During the session, he highlighted the growing environmental impact of textile waste, the consequences of fast fashion, and the role each of us can play in creating more sustainable communities through mindful consumption, reusing and repurposing garments, donating pre-loved clothing, and embracing a circular approach to fashion.
Following the discussion, the first TAGPI Boutique opened its doors—transforming awareness into action. Rescued garments found new homes, demonstrating that climate action can be practical, accessible, and rooted in compassion for our communities.

At its core, TAGPI is about reimagining our relationship with the things we own. It is a reminder that sustainability does not always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it begins with choosing to extend the life of a piece of clothing, reducing what we send to landfills, and inspiring others to do the same.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Almond Branch Church Women's Ministry for partnering with us, and to everyone who donated, volunteered, and participated in this meaningful milestone. Together, we are proving that environmental stewardship and community care can go hand in hand.

Meaningful change begins long before an event takes place—it starts with conversations, collaboration, and communities coming together around a shared vision.

Kalasag Cotabato has been supporting the groundwork for TAGPI: Textile and Garments Purposing Initiative, a youth-led sustainability project personally conceptualized and implemented by our Founder and Chairperson, Arbijei Gatchalian, as his passion project focused on reducing textile waste while promoting dignity and community care.

Through partnership meetings, awareness efforts, donation drives, and volunteer-led sorting activities, hundreds of garments were collected and prepared for redistribution. These activities laid the foundation for what would become a community-based response to both textile waste and clothing insecurity.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who donated their pre-loved clothes, volunteered their time, and championed this initiative. Special thanks to our partners from the Almond Branch Church Women's Ministry for walking alongside us in making this vision possible.

Together, we are proving that sustainability is not just about what we save from landfills—it's about creating systems of compassion, inclusion, and shared responsibility.

TAGPI is a personal passion project conceptualized and led by Arbijei Gatchalian, implemented with the support of Kalasag Cotabato and in partnership with the Almond Branch Church Women's Ministry. The project is also supported by the ASEAN Foundation, Maybank Foundation, TRI Cycle Indonesia, and Rekynd Indonesia.

As part of the BUHAT Initiative Fellowship Program, we continue to highlight emerging media practitioners who are shaping the future of storytelling and digital engagement.

For this speaker feature, we are proud to spotlight Farahnisa Nurulputri, a communications student and aspiring media professional with hands-on experience in journalism and digital media. Her work spans content creation and writing, with active involvement in a student broadcasting team where she has directed on-site interviews with key stakeholders, including government representatives and industry professionals.

Farahnisa also contributes opinion pieces to platforms such as Modern Diplomacy and has produced digital content that has reached over 10,000+ views on Instagram Reels. Her passion for media and innovation has earned her recognition as a fully funded delegate of the Gen Z Retreat, supported by the U.S. Department of State.

Through her work, Farahnisa continues to champion informed storytelling and youth engagement — aligning closely with BUHAT’s mission of empowering young people to critically engage with media and information in the digital age.
