On Indigenous Land.

As we approach Indigenous Peoples day we invite you to consider that our society and much of the world is built on stolen Indigenous Land.

What does it mean to be on stolen Land?

The civic infrastructure, the economic system, private development systems, our relationships with natural resources and all of our relatives are all connected to and in different ways built upon the colonial occupation of this land and the violent displacement of Indigenous people.

How are you connected to these histories and their lineages?

As we engage and heal harmful histories and their present impacts- here and in the world- it’s essential that our allies and accomplices go beyond just acknowledging and being thankful for Indigenous Land, beyond just recognizing the existence of Indigenous people.

These are important first steps but if you stop there, it actually can recreate and perpetuate harm for Indigenous people.

We invite you to go beyond acknowledgement. Take transformative actions in support of Indigenous led work.

What will you do to contribute to healing and justice for Indigenous people?

Art by Fernando Marti, , a glimpse of an urban Indigenous Bay Area, what was, is and could be.

[ID: An image of the urban Indigenous Bay Area printed in a yellow to green ombré . It shows a landscape with Ohlone people in Tule boats navigating towards a marshland and village site with tule houses. Rising behind this scene is the City with construction cranes, skyscrapers and a bridge. The sky is dotted with birds and smoke drifting through. The text reads On Indigenous Land. ]

The ocean sunfish (Mola mola) is the heaviest bony fish, weighing over 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg), and growing up to 10 feet! Their large flat disc-shaped body, tiny mouth, large eyes, and lack of a true tail make them unforgettable. They are slow moving and often found sunbathing at the ocean surface to warm up after deep-diving hunts for salps and jellyfish. Temperate and tropical waters worldwide are where they are found following upwellings in search of gelatinous prey where they can dive to great depths of up to 800 meters or 2,600 feet. At a cleaning station (see photo), small fish remove parasites from their skin, which benefits both parties in this symbiotic relationship. Threats include plastic pollution and balloons (that they mistake for jellyfish), entanglement in fishing gear, and boat strikes.

Did you know 80% of Lawrence’s Goldfinch migrate through California’s Central Valley? From urban centers to rural towns, each community can provide important habitat for birds. Looking to explore ways you can help this ? Consider getting started by choosing native plants, making windows bird-safe, and reducing nighttime lighting. ⁣💛 Learn more at the link in our comments.

Migratory birds connect us all across California and beyond—and they need safe, healthy spaces along their journeys, even in our cities and towns.⁣

Ahead of , we’re calling on Congress to pass the Local Communities and Bird Habitat Stewardship Act that invests in urban habitats, making our communities greener, healthier, and better for birds. 💚 Tap the link in our comments to urge your U.S. Representative to support this bill. ⁣

This is a beaver. You can tell by the way it is. 🦫

Beavers have stocky bodies, flat, hairless paddle-shaped tails and long, chisel-like teeth. A few things that are not a beaver include, but are not limited to, muskrats, nutria, groundhogs and prairie dogs.
