โITโS THE EARTHโS SILENT PLEA FOR CHANGE!โ
The Philippines is regularly hit by powerful typhoons, and climate change is exacerbating their intensity. Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda), one of the strongest typhoons ever recorded, struck the Philippines in November 2013. It caused widespread devastation, particularly in Tacloban City, leaving over 6,000 people dead and millions more affected. The intensity of the storm, which was fueled by rising ocean temperatures due to climate change, was unprecedented. Similar events, such as Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) in 2009 and Typhoon Agaton in 2022, have caused massive flooding, landslides, and loss of life.
Rising sea levels, caused by the melting of glaciers and the thermal expansion of seawater due to global warming, are threatening coastal communities in the Philippines. Metro Manila, with its sprawling population, is particularly vulnerable to flooding. In Zamboanga City, communities are already experiencing the effects of coastal erosion and flooding, putting local livelihoods and homes at risk. Low-lying islands such as Tawi-Tawi and Sulu are also seeing the encroachment of seawater into freshwater sources, making them more susceptible to saltwater intrusion.
