Behind every successful seafarer is a story of growth, a collection of experiences from across the globe, and a set of core values that guide them through the roughest seas. Today, we feature ๐/๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐จ๐ง๐๐ฌ, who shares his perspective on the life that awaits our future deck officers and his favourite place.
For Sir JC, Japan remains unrivaled. Beyond its renowned cleanliness, safety, and discipline, he emphasizes that the countryโs culture mirrors the gold standard of professional maritime operationsโcharacterized by organization, respect, and a perfect balance between adventure and tranquility for weary seafarers.
"Of all the countries I have travelled to during my years at sea, Japan has never been toppled as the best. The reason goes beyond the cleanliness, discipline, and security of the country itself. Even the vessels operating under Japanese management reflect those same standards through excellent onboard operations, complete safety equipment, and a highly organized working environment.
Everything you see about Japan online is not simply for promotionโwhat you see is exactly what you experience. From the ports to the smallest alleyways, the order is impeccable. The people are respectful, disciplined, and welcoming. After long voyages and exhausting watches on deck, a simple walk ashore in Japan offers a unique kind of peace. Their food, culture, and way of life create a balance between calmness and adventure that is hard to put into words until youโve experienced it yourself."
Sir JC also reminds his juniors that while academic excellence is important, character is the true foundation of a career. He emphasizes that skills can be acquired over time, but humility, discipline, and respect are what define a professional.
"My advice is simple: never focus only on becoming academically good. More importantly, strive to become a person of character, discipline, and humility. Knowledge and skills can be mastered with time and experience, but your attitude defines the professionalโand the personโyou will become.
Stay respectful, stay willing to learn, and always remain grounded, no matter how far you go. Challenges, failures, and difficult days are part of the journey, both at sea and in life. Face them head-on, learn from every hardship, and always remember why you started. People may forget your test scores, but they will never forget how you treated others, how you handled pressure, and how you carried yourself. A good mind can bring success, but good character will earn you lasting respect and take you further than you ever imagined."
Hardships are an inevitable part of the journey at sea. He encourages future officers to face challenges head-on, stay grounded, and lead with empathy. Ultimately, he notes that while people may forget one's intelligence, they will always remember the integrity and grace with which one treats others under pressure.
