On this day, 15 February 1889, the first issue of La Solidaridad was published in Barcelona, a decisive event in the intellectual history of Filipino resistance to Spanish colonial rule.

As the principal organ of the Propaganda Movement, it articulated the reformist demands of educated Filipinos, particularly equality before the law, secularization, and representation in the Spanish Cortes. Its publication signaled the emergence of a politically conscious Filipino intelligentsia committed to pursuing reform through reasoned critique.

Through its pages, La Solidaridad exposed colonial injustices and advanced the principles of liberalism, civic rights, and national dignity. It served as a vital forum where writings fostered a shared sense of identity and political consciousness among Filipinos, led by prominent reformists such as José Rizal, Marcelo H. del Pilar, and Graciano López Jaena, one of La Solidaridad’s founders and its first editor.

La Solidaridad, in its six years of existence, became an instrument in the formation of modern Filipino nationalism, as it prepared the intellectual ground upon which the Philippine Revolution would soon rise.

On this day, 130 years ago, Graciano López Jaena, reformist-turned-revolutionary, passed away at Calle de Bot No. 13 in Barcelona, Spain.

López Jaena devoted his life to advocating for the Filipino cause, using his words and pen to challenge injustice and inspire his countrymen. He was among the first Filipinos in Spain to ignite the Propaganda Movement, founding La Solidaridad with his compatriots and serving as its first editor.

Before he went to Spain, he had written his seminal work Fray Botod, which made him a filibustero. In Spain, he joined Masonry and the Republican Party, delivered speeches, and established and managed newspapers that expressed his political stance, particularly on Philippine affairs.

López Jaena initially sought reform but lost his faith in representation within the Spanish system, asserting that independence is never voluntarily granted by a colonizer but must be earned through struggle and sacrifice:

“…I believe that the Philippines can only separate from Spain by means of revolution.”

Years of relentless work and poverty weakened his health. He fell ill with tuberculosis, and despite his unwavering dedication to the cause, his illness claimed him on January 20, 1896. A day after his passing, his remains were brought to El Fossar de la Pedrera and laid in a pauper’s grave at Cementerio del Sud Oeste.

To this day, the exact location of López Jaena’s grave remains unknown, as no Filipino compatriots were present to witness or mark his burial.

May Graciano López Jaena’s life and legacy continue to inspire us, reminding all Filipinos to learn more about his struggles and his fight for the nation.
