A look back at the Mangrove Planting and Coastal Clean-up held last April 26, 2026, at Brgy. Hinaplanon, Bayug Island, Iligan City.โฃ
โฃ
What began as a call to action became a shared effort of care. From clearing coastal waste to planting mangrove seedlings, each step taken that morning contributed to restoring and protecting our shorelines. Beyond the activity itself, the experience brought together students, partners, and volunteers in a space where awareness turned into action.โฃ
โฃ
Through collective participation, this initiative supported coastal resilience, reduced marine waste, and encouraged a deeper sense of responsibility for the environment. More than a one-day effort, it stands as a reminder that meaningful change begins with consistent, community-driven action.โฃ
โฃ
Our gratitude extends to all partner organizations and participants whose support made this initiative possible.โฃ

In this deep reflection, Jorellaine argues that ๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ณ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐˜† ๐—ฎ ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป-๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—บ rooted in human behavior rather than a purely scientific one. Jorellaine maintains that leaving the social sciences out of the equation is like trying to fix a people-driven problem without understanding why people behave the way they do. During the conversation, Jorellaine poignantly observed that students in the social sciences must realize their unique skillsโ€”such as ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ต๐˜‚๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ฟ, ๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜€๐˜†๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€, ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—บ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜… ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜€โ€”are all critical components of effective climate advocacy. For a long time, climate change was treated as a problem of data and graphs. But if the technology to fix the planet already exists, why is the world still waiting? Joining us for our third episode is Ms. Jorellaine Gamos-Sun, a lecturer at MSU-IIT specializing in Ethics and Environmental Ethics. Currently pursuing her Masterโ€™s in Sustainable Development Studies, she integrates philosophical rigor with her background in Applied Ethics to challenge how we view environmental advocacy. As a survivor of Typhoon Sendong, she carries a deeply personal perspective on the human-nature relationship, turning lived experience into a mission for systemic change. โฃ

Instead, it acts as a magnifying glass, intensifying the gender inequalities and social disparities that already exist in our society.โฃ
โฃ
During the episode, Rae explains that while a typhoon brings physical destruction to a community, it places a unique and heavy "emotional burden" on women. In many Filipino households, women are expected to hold the family together during a crisis, from managing scarce food supplies and providing emotional stability for children, even while their own safety is at risk. This burden is amplified in evacuation centers, where women often face a lack of basic "ayuda kits" for menstrual health and reproductive needs, proving that disaster response is frequently designed without a gender-sensitive lens.โฃ
โฃ
Beyond the household, the episode sheds light on the distressing risks faced by women who choose to fight back. Rae highlights that the Philippines is one of the most dangerous places for environmental defenders, and women are often at the frontlines of state repression. She cites the stories of advocates like Jhed Tamano, Jonila Castro, and Rowena Dasig, who have faced trauma and human rights violations for opposing destructive corporate projects. For these women, climate change is not just a battle against nature, but a struggle against a system that silences female voices and threatens their physical safety.โฃ
โฃ
In times of calamities, Rae claimed that women must not be viewed merely as victims but catalysts of change. She emphasizes that when women take their place at the decision-making table, they shift the focus toward a more empathetic, inclusive, and effective form of climate justice.โฃ
โฃ
This shift toward female-led solutions is especially critical in mending our future. Rae notes that the government and big corporations often create mechanisms that silence the stories of those fighting for their land and livelihoods. And by centering women's voices, the movement moves away from "media-sweetheart" optics and toward the kind of principled leadership seen in figures like Greta Thunberg, which showed a kind of leadership that encourages collective action and demands accountability from the worldโ€™s biggest polluters.โฃ
โฃ
Ultimately, the episode concludes that we cannot achieve a sustainable world without dismantling the gender and systemic oppressions that the climate crisis exposes. For students and young advocates, Rae offers a roadmap of โ€œInform, Unite, and Actโ€. She reassures that one does not need to be technical "experts" to join the climate movement as long as their lived experiences of the crisis, their empathy, and their willingness to take part are present, these are their greatest credentials. Climate justice is a collective fight for a future where the weight of a disaster is no longer determined by gender, but by a shared commitment to human rights and the protection of our common home.โฃ

You donโ€™t have to look far to feel the climate crisis in the Philippines. You see it in rains that donโ€™t come when they should, then arrive all at once; in seas that are changing, corals turning pale, fish no longer returning, and harvests that come late or not at all.โฃ
โฃ
As an archipelago of 7,641 islands, the sea is not just scenery, it is vital for our survival. And today, Mother Earth is under immense threat, as global warming drives stronger typhoons, rising sea levels, and more frequent climate disasters across the world. This Earth Day reminds us why it matters here, as this climate crisis is not just local, but rather it is being felt by the people across the globe.โฃ
โฃ
Our seas are choking with plastic, our reefs are dying, storms are growing stronger, and our land is becoming harder to depend on. These changes threaten food, livelihoods, and communities, especially those who have contributed the least to the problem.โฃ
โฃ
For island nations like ours, Earth Day is a reminder that we are on the frontlines and that our choices have real consequences. We donโ€™t have to wait to act. We can start here. We can start now. Now, hereโ€™s the big questionโ€ฆโฃ

To guide us through this complex landscape, we are joined by a formidable young leader who has dedicated her life to the intersection of environmental defense and human rights named Rachelle โ€œRaeโ€ Junsay.โฃ
โฃ
Rae serves as the National Coordinator of Youth Advocates for Climate Action Philippines (YACAP), the countryโ€™s leading alliance of student councils and youth organizations fighting for climate justice. With a background in marketing and business administration, Rae has spent the last two years as a full-time activist, proving that professional skills can be powerfully repurposed to serve the people. Her journey began in junior high with simple zero-waste initiatives, but it quickly evolved as she realized that the environmental crisis cannot be separated from corporate plunder and the struggle of the landless poor.โฃ
โฃ
In this episode, Rae brings her "sharp analysis rooted in genuine peopleโ€™s struggles" to help us understand why climate change is not just about rising sea levels, but about the systemic inequalities that determine who survives the storm.โฃ

In her guest appearance on the debut episode of CAYAโ€™s โ€œWhat on Earth is Happening,โ€ Ms. Francine Norvic Pailagao delivered a message that was equal parts a sobering wake-up call and a roadmap for hope. At the heart of her discussion was the conviction that climate change is far more than an environmental issue but a direct violation of human rights. โฃ
โฃ
Drawing on her experiences as an engineering student and a global intern, Francine emphasized that the youth have been "robbed" of a better environment, left to inherit a world where the burden of climate damage is unfairly distributed.โฃ
โฃ
To ground her advocacy in hard data, Francine explicitly cited figures from Greenpeace to illustrate the local severity of the crisis. She highlighted that the Philippines has reached an estimated 506.1 billion pesos in total losses and damages from climate-related hazards between 2010 and 2020. Furthermore, she noted the immediate impact of recent events, pointing out that the 2023 tropical cyclone season alone resulted in 81.1 billion pesos in damages. For her, these staggering numbers are proof that major polluters and leaders must be held accountable for the displacement, food insecurity, and loss of livelihood that now haunt Filipino communities.โฃ
โฃ
Francineโ€™s message focused on the power of the individual to spark collective change, particularly through a shift in perspective. As she highlighted during the episode:โฃ

โฃ
Moreover, she addressed the "climate anxiety" many young people feel, offering a path forward rooted in being mindful, intentional, and empathetic. She urged students to look beyond themselves and consider how their actions ripple out to affect their communities. By aligning personal values with social action, she believes the youth can transition from feeling overwhelmed to becoming powerful agents of change. โฃ
โฃ
Her final takeaway was a reminder of the strength found in solidarity: while the path to a sustainable world is not a straight line, the simple act of "showing up," seeking mentors, and having faith in oneโ€™s capacity to lead can transform the "robbed" future of the youth into a tomorrow defined by justice and resilience.โฃ

Joining us for our premiere episode is Ms. Francine Norvic Pailagao, an environmental engineering student from MSU-IIT and former president of the Junior Society of Environmental Engineers of the Philippines (MSU-IIT Chapter).

In this episode, we explore:
โ€ฃ Her journey into environmental engineering and advocacy.
โ€ฃ The formative experiences that shaped her perspective, including her internship at Greencheck Solidarity Academy.
โ€ฃ How leadership translates into action within organizations.
โ€ฃ The most pressing environmental issues in our local context.
โ€ฃ The role of the youth in advancing climate justice.

This conversation reminds us that the climate crisis is not experienced equally, and that the youth have both the right and the power to demand a better future.
