PAGbASA: May Pag-asa sa Pagbasa is a youth-led literacy and community engagement initiative that seeks to build a passion-driven community committed to improving children's reading skills through volunteerism, collaboration, and sustainable educational support. Anchored on the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to become a confident reader, the project aims to reduce the number of struggling and non-readers through a structured literacy program, develop and utilize contextualized instructional resources, cultivate a culture of volunteerism among youth and educators, generate resources to sustain project implementation, and strengthen partnerships among schools, local government units, community organizations, and other stakeholders. Implemented from January 17 to May 16, 2026, the project benefited 40 struggling readers from an elementary school in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.

According to Wilfred Miranda, the Project Leader, PAGbASA was inspired by the principles and objectives of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) introduced during the 1st Negros Island Region GCED Youth Congress. These learnings strengthened the teamโ€™s commitment to advancing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, which promotes inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all while ensuring lifelong learning opportunities. Beyond improving literacy skills, the initiative sought to foster a lifelong love for reading, nurture positive values among young learners, and inspire volunteerism and shared responsibility among educators, youth leaders, parents, and community stakeholders in addressing educational gaps.

The project was implemented through the collaborative efforts of LGU Himamaylan, Barangay Local Government Unit of Sara-et, Sara-et Elementary School, SASFA, USWAG Saraetnon, Project KASIKAS, HBONI, SK Sara-et, and private sector partners. Key outputs included the delivery of a community-based literacy program, the development of contextualized lesson plans and instructional materials using both traditional and modern teaching strategies, and the mobilization of 30 volunteer teachers who facilitated reading interventions.

Moreover, the project strengthened partnerships through formal collaboration among the barangay, the school, and community organizations, encouraged active participation of parents and community members, and contributed to improvements in the literacy and numeracy competencies of learners who were previously struggling with foundational reading skills. Through its collaborative and community-driven approach, PAGbASA demonstrated how Global Citizenship Education can empower young leaders and local communities to work together in advancing inclusive and sustainable education.

On July 18, 2026, PAGBASA: May Pag-asa sa Pagbasa successfully conducted fifth learning session at Don Remegio M. Limsiaco Elementary School in Brgy. Libacao, Himamaylan City. The activity brought together 25 enthusiastic learners and 8 dedicated volunteer teachers, all united by a shared commitment to promoting literacy, numeracy, and quality education within the community.

The session began with an opening prayer led by Marie Dawn Hope Faca, setting a peaceful and positive atmosphere that encouraged both the learners and volunteers to begin the day's activities with gratitude, focus, and enthusiasm.

One of the highlights of the session was an engaging storytelling activity presented by Sophia Gentile, who shared the classic story, "The Farmer and His Three Sons." Beyond improving listening and comprehension skills, the story imparted meaningful life lessons about the value of unity, cooperation, perseverance, and the importance of working together to overcome challenges. The learners actively participated in the discussion, reflecting on the story's message and relating it to their own experiences.

Following the storytelling session, the learners were grouped according to their respective grade levels to ensure that each child received instruction suited to their learning needs and abilities. The volunteer teachers conducted individualized one-on-one reading sessions, patiently guiding each learner in developing reading fluency, comprehension, pronunciation, and self-confidence. This personalized approach allowed the volunteers to monitor each learner's progress while providing encouragement and immediate feedback.

Simultaneously, learners participated in grade-level numeracy activities that strengthened their mathematical skills through interactive and age-appropriate exercises. These activities promoted critical thinking, problem-solving, and active participation, making learning both enjoyable and meaningful.

Throughout the session, the learners demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm, confidence, and willingness to learn. Their active participation and eagerness to improve reflected the positive impact of the program, while the unwavering dedication and compassion of the volunteer teachers created an environment where every child felt encouraged, valued, and motivated to succeed.

The successful conduct of this learning session is another testament to PAGBASA: May Pag-asa sa Pagbasa's unwavering commitment to improving literacy and numeracy among young learners while nurturing a genuine love for learning. Through the collective efforts of its 8 volunteer teachers and the active participation of 25 learners, the program continues to provide meaningful educational opportunities, empower children with essential life skills, and inspire hope within the communityโ€”proving that when people work together for education, every child is given a greater chance to build a brighter future.

The activity formed part of the program's continuing mission to strengthen the literacy skills of young learners through engaging, interactive, and meaningful educational experiences facilitated by its dedicated volunteer teachers.

The learning session began with an opening prayer led by Sofia Gentile, creating a peaceful, positive, and focused atmosphere for both the learners and volunteers. The prayer encouraged everyone to begin the day with gratitude, unity, and enthusiasm, reminding participants of the importance of working together in building a supportive and inspiring learning environment.

One of the highlights of the session was an engaging storytelling activity facilitated by Marie Dawn Hope Faca, who brought the classic Filipino folktale "Ang Alamat ng Pinya" to life through expressive narration and interactive discussions. More than simply entertaining the children, the folktale imparted valuable lessons on obedience, responsibility, humility, and the importance of listening to one's parents. The storytelling activity also enhanced the learners' listening comprehension, imagination, critical thinking, and appreciation for Filipino literature and culture.

Following the storytelling session, the volunteers proceeded with the formal lesson on the Filipino Alphabet, facilitated by Jalyn Faulan and Sofia Gentile.
